So it's going around ( a bit more seriously) that they may (are?) setting up Buffy/Xander pairing in the comics.

Why is it that my first urge is to laugh? ...Kind of an evil laugh, but laugh all the same.

I don't think Joss is setting that up at all, although I guess he's toying with it the way cats toy with mice. In today's issue, he has some random, as yet unnamed newbie Slayer crushing on Xander, so I'm sure he has some long-term plans for that.

I think the urge to laugh is that I have this deep seeded belief that Joss toys with all shippers like cats with mice... or maybe like cats with those little green lizards. You know, the ones where cats bite off their tails but not kill them... at least not right away.

I don't really think he's setting it up, but just throwing it out there annoys me enough. I'm already annoyed enough with Xander the Super Stud Who Wears Spike's Clothes and Gives Orders Like a Real Man. I don't need the Xander that Buffy has sex dreams about too.

I am amused that it took being actor-less and not having real access to Angel and Spike to get Xander any Buffy action though. The amusement is just lessened when I imagine the glee of all the Xanderistas that used to drive me insane.

Well, I can see the (morbid) humor in any ludicrously long-suffering B/Xers thinking their ship is coming in, I suppose.

Ah well, I'm overstressed, sleep deprived, and in general flat-out overworked and exhausted. I take my evil amusement where I find it. :)

The Xanderistas are the big part of any irritation I feel about it. But I have to admit to basically viewing this as Joss's version of fanfic. I think that's because it's such a change in medium that I can't think of it as quite the same thing as the show. It's just another fanfic universe for me, one that leans somewhat toward what I find most snarkily amusing about Jossian tendencies.

I'm not sure what to think. One one side I got this theory that it is some waked out Buffy's dream of finding her true love. On the other side, Joss bringing Buffy and Xander together. Don't get me wrong, I am no way a Xander/Buffy fan, I am all about the Spuffy, but Joss did say that at the beginning, he was thinking about bring this two characters together. So I think that maybe now he trying that out. Ether way, I can't wait of the next issue.

My laughter was more of the hysterical variety and accompanied by nausea.

I can't see Joss penning a romantic happy ending for anyone, mainly because he never has (well, except for Riley and Kennedy which...well, that sort of speaks for itself).

Just think of all the ways it will inevitably go horrible wrong... like the first time Buffy clocks him, she breaks his arm.

So she "missed her chance"* with him in the actual series, so now Joss is getting his wish and pairing her with his alter-ego? You're right; it's laughable. But as Xander has now magically morphed into a swaggering, eyepatch-wearing romance novel hero, how can she resist? Snerk.

*Actual "Hell's Bells" dialogue cut from the final shooting script - remember?

Yeah, I just saw the second issue today. Spoilers below, so don't look if you don't want to know...

Not only is there a young Slayer who's crushing on Xander, but there's a dream sequence with Buffy hitting on Xander (Buffy's dream, not his), that strongly impliles that either a) this has actually happened before or that b) she's at least thought about it. But then in that same dream, we also get the appearance of either Spike or Angel (I'm guessing - the figure is headless, so it's still being played coy), who calls her "my love," so it looks to me like ol' Joss is just mashing every 'shipper button simultaneously to get a response.

Maybe Joss' master plans is to share the love and give a little crumb to every ship in the 'verse :->

Yes! I knew Angel's little finger (or the equivalent) would get a look-in in issue 2 after we got Spike's boots in 1.

I get the issue later today so haven't read this yet but it sounds to me that Joss is trying to make out Buffy is just completely randy because she'd not getting any.

um, bullshit?

Have read the first one. Which I loved. And nothing is clearer than the fact that Joss really DOESN'T have any interested in the romances. Really doesn't. That just isn't his point. She may wind up, any of them may wind up, involved with someone at some point, for awhile, but only if it furthers the main story - which won't be a ship.

And I saw no sign whatever of Buffy/Xander incidentally.

The figure actually looks more like Spike to me, but since this is also the same issue where Giles is only recognizable because he has glasses and a teacup, and Andrew (yes, we have Andrew) looks different from panel to panel, I'm not assigning a lot of significance to how he looks without seeing a face. Who knows, since it's a dream sequence, this could even be a composite figure.

You know, the more I think about it, the less I can understand why the Banders (and that sounds like a species of monkey) are so pleased about this seeming development.

For one thing, this is only issue 2 of what is now purported to be a 50 issue series and it seems extremely unlikely that Joss would pair Buffy up with someone right at the start, even if he was at all interested in 'ships, which he isn't. And for another thing, given Buffy's track record with men, if I were a Xander fan, I'd be more inclined to say run, Xander, run, while you can.

Tell me, if you're still around, I saw one of the posters on the Dark Horse message board being all smug about this dream sequence because she took it to mean that Buffy doesn't love Spike (she wrote it 'wuv' of course - these people really should try using a spellchecker). It's not really as clearcut as all that, is it? I mean, this is Joss we're talking about.

From: [identity profile] thedeadlyhook.livejournal.com
No, it's not clearcut at all. More spoilers below....

The most I could draw from any of it, counting this issue and the first one, is that Buffy is generally horny - the implication seems to be that either she and Xander have got it together before, and in his words "we both know what a bad idea" that was, and her response is "I'll be gentle this time," which sort of suggests that if this was a real event that she's dreaming about in retrospect, then Xander's already experienced one of Buffy's rougher approaches to sex, and is now a little leery of her. And, there's a Sleeping Beauty-style sitch in which Buffy can only be awakened by true love's kiss, and Xander doesn't immediately step up to the plate, which I think kind of seals it. Whichever way this is going to be played, none of it is a clearcut romance.

Thanks. I thought as much. Will have to try and think of a humourous and not too nasty put-down now for that poster on Dark Horse.

Most of them only seem to be about 12 so you have to be gentle.

Nods. That's pretty much my reaction to this. And if all those B/X people think their dream has finally come true... well, let me point out what happened to B/A and B/S.

Hey, just stumbled on this blog and I hope you don't mind an alternative opinion.

I think, like most episodes of the show, and seasons, Joss has been showing how these characters grow. I don't think Xander has magically morphed - he's still the goofy guy he always was - making jokes, wearing the ducky pjs. But he's lived a life, lost a love, watched the people around him and the pain they've gone through and stood by them.

I'm not saying that he deserves Buffy because he's Mr. Dependable or something. But as somebody who started off as a goofy boy and learned to be a man, I get how Xander could be more attractive to women now. He's grown. Spike was a Xanderish kinda guy until he got bitten by Druisilla - not everyone is lucky enough to get bitten by a vampire to turn into a suave and sexy guy. Most men have to learn how to be charming and confident.

And maybe, just maybe, somebody might take a second look at a more confident Xander, who's fulfilling the watcher role that he seemed primed for in earlier season before he, like most of the characters, lost his way.

But let's face it. There's no happy ever afters in the Joss world, because, well, Joss is evil. But not only that but because it's dramatically boring to have people in a happy relationship. That's why people kiss and live happily ever after at the end. We don't get see the rest of that stuff.

Anyway, awesome fandom. Love that you guys are digging the book. Hope you don't mind my intrusion into your world. Thanks for listening.

I'm really wondering if the headless figure is Dracula. It being Spike is just too much of a crumb to throw.

I seriously hate how creepy wish-fulfillment this whole series has been towards Xander thus far. The dreamy romantic hero depiction of him in the drawing, the girl crushing on him, the way he gets to be all man in charge with even Buffy calling him a "Watcher", and now Buffy's lusting after him? And comedic/disturbing as it might be shown as, putting it in there is way too deliberate for me to write off.

How long after the end of the show is this supposed to be? I mean, did Xander mourn poor Anya at all? Even a month or two?
