...and LJ finally got around to doing what they should have done yesterday -- admit that they really, really screwed up  (yeah, I know corporate-speak, but we're dealing with corporations so I really don't expect a lot out of them except to be left the hell alone).

Regarding talks of fandom relocations, it strikes me that relocating would only give the morons at WfI the delusion that they 'won' in some sense, and they're deluded (and scary) enough as it is.  They don't need to be emboldened by delusions of any kind of 'success'.  I side with it being better for fandom to stand its ground and take on all comers.

Quite apart from letting the idiots think they've won, if fandom moves en masse, said idiots would probably just follow; LJ isn't the first place they've targeted.

Personally, I can understand LJ's desperation to limit their own legal liability, and since apparently all journal owners need to do to prevent a recurrence of the problem is edit interest lists, it only makes sense to do it.

For me it's a customer service issue too. This isn't the first time LJ hasn't used a grain of common sense when dealing with stuff like this. I know I might get the same at GJ but at least I won't be paying for it.

Yeah. And to be perfectly honest, how reckless/silly/astounding is it that people thought to list such things as interests? Really, the internet doesn't mean you leave your common sense behind. For common sense and clarity, it's better to find better forms of labelling. If you write fanfic surely you have some concept of the power of language.

Although, truthfully, did the Vox thing actually amount to anything or bring anyone inconvenience? It seemed mostly a case of huge foot-in-mouth disease.

...which is to say they could have found a way to label their interest such that it brings a sense of its context with it.

I was thinking of the breastfeeding icon thing too. They seem too suspend first and take their own sweet time asking and answering questions.

I think you're right. We should stay until we simply can't any more, but I don't think I want to give LJ any more of my money.

I guess I'm cynical enough that I don't tend to believe that the alternatives will be much different. Such entities in general are big, dumb, lumbering beasts that react slowly and usually with a sense of self-preservation. But, then, I'm cynical in that way.

While I appreciate LJ's abject contrition (such as it is and as tardy as it is), the damage is done -- I won't delete my account, but they won't be getting any more of my money.

A reasonable reaction. Still, I think most of their screw up is really about general stupidity and incompetence more than anything else.

An understandable reaction, but I tend to think that the debacle on LJ's part is probably more indicative of general idiocy and incompetency than anything else.
