So I spent a long weekend ripping out the carpet (and padding and tack strips) and then laying hard wood flooring. Never got to the closet but I have gotten my bedroom habitable again (had to sleep at my parents all weekend.) I think it looks pretty good but right now I'm both exhausted and achey (but with a bedroom with a great new floor).

Ouch. I did that with my living room a while back (didn't lay down new flooring, but pulled up the carpet and the tacking). Pulling up the tacking strips was one of the more unpleasant jobs I've ever done. It did look good when it was done, though.

Yeah, since they invented nail guns, anything that has to be nailed down is really nailed down.

Having removed carpet from my kitchen and dining room as well, I am in posession of a monstrously huge crowbar that makes pulling up the tack strips much easier (though probably just as exhausting because it's really heavy.)

Which is probably why I bought the wood more than a year ago but only just got around to doing the project (or half of it, anyway. I still have the study to go, but it will probably be another year before I get around to that.)

I did the same thing in my living room almost two years ago. The wood is simply so much easier to keep clean that as much work as it is to put it down, it's worth it for the ease in keeping it clean afterward.
