So, I gather Joss is returning to TV (didn't he swear he was going to movies? Then not so TV became okay again? Oh well, at least he'll be employed. That's got to be good for something somewhere). Oh and apparently he's doing the show with Eliza Dushku.

Um. Okay. I think that's all I'll say about the matter.

Wish I could feel more enthusiastic about this after reading the premise, but hey it may turn out brilliantly. Trouble is It all rather sounds like Joe 90 but with 'tits'....

I actually might feel worse if I was enthusiastic about it. If I didn't like ED, I don't think I would be bothered with feelings of guilt over not being enthusiastic about it.

Oh I don't feel guilty. I'm still not convinced this is going to turn out any good.

But we'll see I suppose.

Well, I'm glad Joss is going to make some TV. Even if it's a trainwreck, it will probably be an interesting one. Aside from that, I think FOX has a strange business strategy of only hiring people who have been proven failures for them in the past. They probably think Fridays at 8PM is the perfect timeslot for this, as well :)

Oh, I don't think it will be a train wreck. Joss isn't incompetent. There will surely be a witty pilot with great dialog followed by other witty episodes with an undercurrent of darkness that can be relished. I just also suspect that it will probably end up having many of the same themes and story tropes that his other shows developed over time. I sort of grew tired of the evil parent refrain and the love/sex=pain/death thing. And I never got his skinny waif thing to begin with. So, even though I know it will probably be a shiny, shiny thing with witty banter and layers of metaphors and a good degree of literacy, I drag my feet, wondering if I'm up for another round of Joss's view of life and suspecting that I'm not. But I would expect a well produced pilot with some appealing aspects. If it's a trainwreck, it would be a slow-motion one and we'd be too invested by then to believe it was really barreling down the tracks headed straight for us until it was all over but the eternal fan wars. :)

Certainly he has a lot of recurring themes, although I thought Firefly exploerd different ground than Buffy and Angel. I expect an interesting show - my main concern is that I can't imagine how this show won't be swiftly cancelled, no matter how good it is.

It's been noted that this season networks have been a bit slower to pull the trigger. Mainly because even old standbys aren't ratings busters any more and they're having to limit expectations.

Although, one wonders if the pending writers strike will kill of shows without the networks even trying.

At any rate, Fox gave Chris Carter a handful of chances (albeit all but XF quickly cancelled) so I can see them giving Joss multiple rolls of the dice to see if he comes up with anything.

Fox is a bit thin for programming these days, isn't it? (Actually other than House and 24 [and I didn't even watch it past mid-season last year) I don't watch a lot of Fox so I'm not sure that I even know their lineup looks like these days.)

Oh my Lord God. Is this series going to be prefaced by the usual "FROM THE GENIUS OF JOSS WHEDON?" Because, gag, etc.

I suspect he's returning to TV because, one, all his film plans have tanked, and, two, Kevin Smith has made it respectable for an indie "auteur" to go slumming there again. Still a massive tool, Joss.

I would suspect so - on all counts.

'suspect' or are 'somewhat certain' :)

Okay, the latter.

Which is why I will not be watching it.

Fool me once....

Never again.

Do you doubt the GENIUS OF JOSS WHEDON?! Heretic. Blasphemer! Meanie!

Heh.

(If it's any consolation, deep down he probably believes he's slumming.)

The premise is almost completely uninteresting to me and I'm a little gunshy (for some reason I typed "I'm a little gunship" first without thinking about it -- which I suppose is a bit like being a little teapot, only with more weaponry) when it comes to Joss productions these days, mostly because he seems to have been a bit directionless as of late.

The one thing that tips the scales for me, though, is that Tim Minear is apparently involved. So, I'll give it a look, but really... that premise just doesn't sound terribly appealing.

Hmmm... although if they were to throw David Greenwalt into the mix, I would *so* be there. I'm rather confident in Joss's ability to come up with ideas, Tim Minear's ability to write in those universes and David Greenwalt's ability to keep the whole thing pulled together with some sort of coherency.

Yeah, but Tim Minear has had as much success delivering as the Exxon Valdez. However, in conjunction with Joss, maybe. Or not.

IDK, I think I should be more excited, but I'm not. Certainly I'll watch it but I'm a) not going to get invested because it's on Fox, and 2) I'm not going to fall in love with any of the characters because Joss will find out and kill them.

See, that's what I'm talking about. It's Joss's tendency to try to kill what I love that keeps me from loving again.

I've been hurt.

Yeah, Joss's motto of "I don't give them what they want, I give them what they need," is just so much bullshit. Hey, Joss. I didn't need Wash to be impaled through the chest,, you fucker.

Um, yeah. I got issues. :)

If it's a little gunship, John Crichton could blow it up. I miss John Crichton.

But I totally understand the Minear thing. That gave me a twinge of "I should watch this."

Then I remembered that with Joss where there's love there's rip your throat and heart out misery, so it's best not to become attached.

The premise doesn't exactly fill me with enthusiasm either, but we'll see.

Or not.

It depends on whether it gets shown over here on a channel I can watch.

Since it's a pilot, it's not really "picked up" here yet either. Strange timing though since a writers strike is looming in L.A. Guess they wanted his name on the contract early.

My main problem with it, aside of ED being in it, is that it's once again a show about a little girl who kicks ass. Why is Whedon so incapable of writing about women, rather than girls?

Date: 2007-11-02 03:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com
At leat ED isn't a waif. Joss has a thing not just about girls kicking but but innocent looking waifs kicking butt.

Dark Angel with a Jessica Alba wannabe.

I don't like ED. This doesn't really sound like good news at all. In the end this will only put off any TV possibility for a Buffyverse new thing. I know there wasn't any chance anyway, but you can always dream.

Sadly, I don't think he has interest in the Buffyverse/Angelverse. If he ever returns to it, at this point I'm afraid it would only be out of a desire for money not because his heart is in it.

Yeah, just look at that piece of crap called the Buffy s8 comic.

There, I think he still has the interest,he is doing the comics after all. Just it is difficult to do it appropiately. If he could make it on TV again, I think it would have a fair chance of being neat. But comics is really really not the way to go. I know he tried to do some movies of Buffyverse but was rebuffed by the TV chains.

Thing is, I love comics, I adore what people can do with the medium and I think when done right, comics allow a writer opportunities that you can't get on television.

Just look at Spike:Asylum or Spike:Shadow Puppets for an example of what a good comic writer with interest in the characters involved, can do.

The problem with the s8 comic isn't that it's a comic. It's that it plain out sucks. Both as a comic and as a story.

The characters are unrecognizable, what little there still is of them has reverted to their s1 status, expecting us to forget all the changes those people have been through. Lots of flash and big scene set ups, but no personality, no genuine humor and most of all, no likeable characters.

And don't even get me started on the setting*grumble*
