While browsing Audible.com's 100 essential audiobooks, I read one of the 'reviews' for Game of Thrones. Some reader review gave it a bad rating and had this to say:

"It is a shame that George R. R. Martin, who has shown great skill in working out a complex political mystery, had to include so many solicitous sexual scenes"

Solicitous sex? Is this a bad thing? Wouldn't want someone being solicitous during sex, now would we?

Reading the rest of the review where the "reviewer" complained about "uncontrolled lust" and "perversion," while suggesting that the book would be so much better with the sex taken out (especially any hints of homosexuality) I realized that the dumbass idiot 'reviewer' didn't mean solicitous sex but had meant salacious sex (well, not even that, really, but you know what I mean).

People, it's called a dictionary (and a mind). Use it. Oh, and don't worry about the scourge of solicitous sex! >:)

Ooh, there's a lot of sex in Game of Thrones? I didn't know this.

I've thought a few times to put it on my audible list, but the narrator of the thing is just so damn IRRITATING (audible allows you to listen to snippets of books before buying them. It's a blessing because a bad narrator can destroy a book). I've given up on ever listening to the book so it will have to wait until I have time to sit and actually read the several thousand pages already in the multi-book saga.

By the time that rolls around, it'll be airing on HBO.

Yeah, that's kinda why I've never gotten it from the library. It's too damned much of a commitment. Hey, maybe I'll save it for retirement. *g*

It might also be good to wait until he finishes the series, assuming he ever does. He's been working on the next book for about four years now.

Yeah, some of the sex is really.... fantasy book sex. But usually it's not enough to put you off the story.

HAH, yes, before I got to your thoughts, I thought "s/he totally meant 'salacious'" ;)

Yes, don't you love it when people mess up like that?

I WANT MY SOLICITOUS SEX!

Heh. I'll blame it on tiredness but my first reaction on reading "solicitous sexual scenes" was to frown and go WTF? It actually took a few moments for me to figure out that they had meant "salacious". I kept wondering "Are they using sex to buy favors or something?"

I don't remember there being a lot of sex in that book {solicitous or salacious.} There was some but it was the kind that had to do with plot.I think there might've been a tavern wench acting out the former ;) Who knows by the time I got to the end I forgot some of the start.

I've never managed to sit and read much of it (I've owned the book for two years and yet somehow have never managed to go beyond chapter three) but I never had the impression that it was particularly sexy. Still the whole "solicitous sex" thing had me quite confused. :)

Solicitous sex sounds delightfully awkward.

One would think it best to be on the receiving side of the "solicitous" thing. :)

ahahah... Not only this reviewer needs a dictionary but s/he hasn't got a clue about elementary psychology...the sure way of making more people buy a book is by saying that it has sex in it(salacious or not).... now runs to buy book ;-)

It worked that way for me. I already own the book but I just had to skim through it to refresh my memory. One character must have her wedding night witnessed. [hey, it was a Christan practice in the middle ages if my romance novels can be believed.] Perhaps this idiot objected to hubby's choice of position. This king really liked horses ;)

I think there's one character that's gay but I don't think he gets any in this novel. [i guess that's why it 'hints]

Hahahaha! I think maybe the "reviewer" meant gratuitous sex, though. Which is even funnier!
