Femmenerd's post about pre-DVD TV (that since has been released on DVD) reminded me of Northern Exposure. This brought on a wave of nostalgia for NE's cock-eyed magical realism and sent me to YouTube to see if someone had posted clips. And, it being YouTube, someone has!

Joel Freaking Out
Adam ranting
Holling and Maurice
Ed and Ruth-Ann

Maggie fantasizing Joel's death...

Chris's voice overs and performance art

Joel and Maggie finally do it (lol)

Joel's Series Exit...

And the end of the series as a whole (And, yeah, after Joel's exit, they eventually paired Maggie w/ Chris so she ended up w/ him in the end).

Geez, I should get some icons! I mean, I have "chris in the morning" listed as an interest... Also, I wonder if they have the scene up on you tube where Chris is all "hot for authority" when Maggie bangs the gavel. Hee!

The suit! I have to admit to shipping Chris/Maggie. I mean I enjoyed the Joel/Maggie bickering/tension the whole way through but that was an interesting way to go. But I actually missed most of it when it was on TV (I was in boarding school, I think?) and when I saw the last episode I was severely confused. [livejournal.com profile] greenapricot and I mainlined the last season when it came out last spring in like two days--we were so determined to get to the Chris/Maggie. Unfortunately, cancellation made them have to deal with that storyline (and well, most of them actually) in a seriously abbreviated fashion.

I remember at the time (and I too missed large chunks of it as I was buried in school) that I reacted with a sniff and thinking it was forced. On watching reruns when it was on A&E a few years ago, I struck me that in the end, it made perfect sense. Joel's story really would and should end with his returning to New York a (slightly) changed man, more centered for his experiences in Cicely. That, however, was not at all what Maggie needed. That was her niche and she was happy there. So, yes, Chris was the perfect partner for her and it's far easier to imagine their having an entire life together rather than Maggie/Joel who were fun to watch with the "opposites attract" thing but who wouldn't be particularly suited to one another. Chis/Maggie actually "fit" as a permanent match far better, IMHO.

I adored NE! I find that Men in Trees, while not as good, has enough of the same outdoorsy, wacky flavor to keep me coming back every week.

Oh, man. Loved that show! The song "Our Town" that they play at the end of the series finale never fails to make me tear up a bit. I gotta check Amazon or the torrent sites and find me a copy of that song...

Joel & Maggie were the last couple I shipped until Spuffy came along, and the scene when they finally, finally, finally did it was the best I'd seen until Spike and Buffy brought the house down.

I loved that series, but it ended for me when Joel left. He was by no means the only character I liked, but his character was a key ingredient in the magic of the whole. Without him the magic fizzled. J & M had real chemistry. There was no descernible chemistry between her and anyone else - from my perspective anyway.
