Name your 10 absolutely favorite couples (het/slash/canon/fanon) and ask people to see what trends they notice about your couples. Try to pick different fandoms.
First off, ten? TEN???! How am I to come up with ten?
1) John/Aeryn, Farscape
2) Mulder/Scully, X-Files
3) Spike/Buffy, BtVS
Er...um... After this it's increasingly hazy. But I did like/watch/root for the others as well... I guess. More often than not, anyway.
4) Jack/Jennifer, Days of Our Lives (circa early 1990s. It was high school, okay?!)
5) Kyle Reese/Sarah Connor, Terminator
6) Sawyer/Juliet, Lost
7) Michael/Maria, Roswell
8) Charlotte/Harry, Sex and the City
9) Harry/Murphy, Dresden Files - the novels
10) Nick Knight/ Janette/Lacroix (Ot3 okay?) , Forever Knight
And Spock/Uhura have potential, if developed. I probably need to find fanfic...
My take on commonalities
Mostly equal partnerships often with the guy as the more romantic and woman as the practical, logical. (Spock/Uhura would run counter to this... obviously).
There's a bit of idealism in most of the pairings (Though Sawyer/Juliet would run counter to that)
There's a bit of cynicsm in a number of them.
Most tend toward adventure.
Majority feature banter and/or snark.

I've been butting in into various Star Trek conversations, and seeing a split in interpretation of Spock/Uhura in the movie. Many saw them being already in the relationship which was revealed in the turbolift kiss, and those people (rightfully, I think) were feeling iffy about it, as that would really be a violation of ethics and favoritism to take Uhura on the ship.
But I saw it as their romantic relationship starting with that turbolift kiss, with nothing but teacher/student friendship before. In this context, it is so beautiful, and it pains me that because the movie was confusing about it, so many people are not on board with it and felt it OOC. :(
