Okay, so I outed myself on my Michael Jackson post as someone who never actually bought a Michael Jackson album, cassette, or CD (not an MP3 either). But, all the hullabaloo did make me somewhat nostalgic for the music that I grew up with. Behind the cut a a poll of 80s albums/CDs/Whatever. What did those of us who were around own back then (and I know I'm leaving alot out but these are the ones I could think of). Warning: A few could be embarrassing to admit to owning.

I am not at all embarrassed to own any of these. :)

Hee! Yeah, but you didn't have to confess to owning "Xanadu!" :)

I am not the teeniest bit ashamed of my Xanadu soundtrack. The movie's awful, but the duet with Gene Kelly is sweet.

Heh, I listened to it. A lot. (And the movie was horrible).

Wow... I owned one of these. That's it. Of course, I didn't even know that top-40 radio existed until I was in high school. Yes, I was a sheltered child...

Gowan and Chris de Burgh were my particular vices back then, as I recall.

I had some friends with interesting (and diverse) tastes in pop-rock music. :)

Wow - I own none of those soundtracks, which I guess is weird. However, going over these lists I now realize how Brit-heavy my '80s collection was/is - I'd kill myself before I'd buy a Mellencamp or ZZ Top CD, but I am completely unashamed of owning any and all Duran Duran, Thompson Twins and Culture Club albums. I've also never bought a Madonna CD, although I do own Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad.

I realized that I was pretty Brit-heavy myself (Hey, I had Pet Shop Boys!). I mostly included Mellencamp and ZZ Top because they were somewhat ubiquitous in my high school (Same sith Springsteen and Van Halen). I didn't actually own them, but they certainly remind me of those days. And David Lee Roth singing "Just a gigolo..." will forever and always remind me of Beta Convention in 9th grade. :) (And "Purple Rain" Student Council 'summer camp' ... what the heck was that? Teen leadership conference or something? I don't remember questioning at the time, but who the heck goes to a 'camp' associated with being on the student council?)

Then I got into the Architecture department by the late 80s and things just got weird. (That's where "The Smiths" and "Violent Femmes" came in. Weird was The Smiths forte). (And Red Hot Chilli Peppers filmed their first-ever video at my university and we had a free show, which is why they also remind me of the tail end of the 1980s)

And, I suppose, "Purple Rain" is a soundtrack too, but I never think of it that way.

In the early 80's I owned a lot of these weird things called "45's." They looked a little like CDs, but they only had two songs on them, and you had to stand up to hear the second one (to flip the record over). *g*

I loved a lot of these songs but didn't own the albums until I was older and could afford them. My first CD was Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell" and then Led Zepplin's "Runes."

I had a crap-load of 45s as well, as well as an arrayed assortment of LPs and cassettes, both of which are now essentially useless because I have nothing which could play them. But I do still have a huge box of cassettes somewhere.

I don't actually remember what my first CD was.

I'm comment hijacking because I was gonna chime in with 45's. I distinctly remember my long running favorite being "White Wedding" by Billy Idol, but I can't remember what was on the B-side, and now that's gonna drive me nuts all day.

My first cd? I got two for Christmas. The Joshua Tree by U2 and, dear Lord, a best of Bob Seger. I still have these and they'll play. Because I am way too anal.

I have all my records simply because that "rare vinyl collectible" market never turned up -- vinyl is practically worthless, which is sad, since analog still sounds better on a good turntable than digital (sayeth the music snob)... doesn't stop me wanting to get everything digital, though! (I do still have a turntable, but all my records are carefully stored in paper, cardboard, and mylar -- I don't play them often. CDs are more durable, and MP3s even more so!).

I'll also throw in Echo and the Bunnymen, the Psychedelic Furs, New Order, and Depeche Mode!

Oh, look, a reason to pull out my John Taylor icon!

Oh! Depeche Mode! Forgot them! Also the Psychedelic Furs.

Then again, after finishing the poll I thought up a bunch of others, including Janet Jackson, who I completely forgot.

Plus, I had a few like "Tangerine Dreams" which I figured would be a tad obscure. The Architecture Department could play some pretty weird stuff when 2 am rolled around in studios.

cough I had Tangerine dream cough

Just saying.

And no, i didn't have a Flock of Seagulls type haircut in 1985 or anything.

Flock of Seagulls!

How about Mr. Mister? (I had that cassette) ::shrinks away in shame::

You must be about my age-- I had quite a few of these!

Uhm, Xandau was my sister's. Honest! Really!

Alas, since my sister is so much older than myself, I cannot blame her for the Xanadu LP. That was purely my own doing.

Does it count if I bought them in the 90's and 00's ? Because really at that time I was was at most eight at the end of the of the 80's. I really didn't have that much music, unless you count Big Bird records, and nursery rhymes. Other than a weird small tape thing I had as a kid which only played Walk like an Egyptian and Bad.
Otherwise the most I listened to was Gospel, Country, Elvis, 50's rock and roll, and gloria estefan. Or basically my mother's music.

I think I was somewhat heavily influenced by having a sister 12 1/2 years older than myself, so I was going to bed listening to things like The Who, Rush, and Pink Floyd... when I was four.

Ah, I am an only child. So my music options were basically my mother's alone, or grandparents.

What can we say? It was the 80s. :) (Sting, however, is still hot. )

Heh. My brother (who is a bit younger than me) went to The Police reunion tour a few years ago. I was shocked as I thought he would be too cool for that. But of course we're both going to Billy Joel and Elton John on 8/1 so I guess not!

Hee! I listened to all country (and some of dad's old rock albums, which is how I ended up with Don Henley) in the 80's. I didn't start listening to more recent stuff until alternative rock came around. And now I'm back to oldies and country again.

You can imagine that I was really popular in the 80's :P
