Link gakked from [livejournal.com profile] stoney321  .   Fanfic Wank , linked because it's funny. Behold the wankiness of a prof author fighting the noble (and hopeless) battle against teh evol fanficcers, because evil fanficcers writing cracky smut of her cracky smut and that's icky. (Haven't read the books but from Stoney's description and the fandom_wank comments, seems to me they're pretty cracky and amazingly smutty all on their own.  :)

Ahahaha! I love the tag: "writers are often pompous douches".

You just helped me figured why I couldn't get past the first half of Outlander. It was a time travel romance trying hard not to be fantasy or romance. There wasn't enough of either crack or smut to make it fun for me.

I admit to low taste in fiction. I'm a white slaver what, do you expect?

I need to get the edit function everyone else has. ;-)

Now I feel vindicated for not finishing Outlander - which had been rec'd to me by a friend, but I got incredibly bored with half way through. It's very saccarine and over-written in places.

As for legality of fanfic? She's wrong. Most people are. Fanfic actually falls within fair use - as long as you are not making a profit off of it or deliberately depriving the original creator of revenue. Otherwise legal.

And, there's a lot of published fanfic - Pride and Prejudice with Zombies comes to mind. Authors who speak out against it basically make fools of themselves and alienate readers. Anne Macaffrey and Anne Rice - did just that several years ago.
The smart writers - realize it is a compliment and ensures a fanbase.

I decided reading fanfic was really good way to stick it to the book publishing industry - who I have a serious bone to pick with. The Kindle is making that even easier.

I love professional writer wank. It's some of my favorite. And anti-fanfic tirades are some of my favorite, too (oh, Lee Goldberg). This combination is going to be glorious, I can feel it in my bones.
