Ughhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

*head desk* *head desk* *head desk is not adequate* *head desk*

So 5:50pm-ish yesterday I opened up the program we use to review drawings. A program published by AutoDesk so one would assume that it would be compatible with another AutoDesk program, AutoCad. However, apparently, they haven't tested it against recent versions of AutoCad... yet.

Guess what? It's not compatible! It freaking deleted the previous version of the program!

Since, by then it was 6pm, I just set the computer to Windows System Restore, figuring that it would have my work computer back to working order this morning. And, I guess, it may have sorta-kinda did. I don't know. It didn't load any of my personal settings, leaving it basically at Windows Default, which meant that none of the customizations in AutoCad had been entered leaving me a little shy of 'workable'.

We don't do computer maintenance in-house, so we called the computer people and they didn't answer. A co-worker (who is the closest to computer guru that we have in house) poked around and deleted an "Unknown User Profile" on my hard drive that was really big.

And then... ALL MY PERSONAL FILES WENT POOF! (That would be 900 or so MP3 files, a couple of audio books, and the complete set of plans for my sister's house). And they weren't in the recycle bin either. And they aren't restorable through system-restore! They're just gone. (I do have back-ups on CDs... somewhere. God knows where. And that doesn't make any of it less of a pain).

An hour or two later, the actual computer guru finally called, and, yep, all personal files have now gone POOF with the "Unknown User Profile." (Only personal files are on our hard drives. All of the work files are on the network, so we don't bother backing up our personal hard drives).

And I still have none of my AutoCad personalized menus, making me spend the last couple of hours setting them up -- again -- in order to be able to function at all.

Oh, but it's more than that.

I don't have printing network or their multiple drivers on my computer now.

I don't have the printing logging progam functional either (and nothing is printed if it can't be logged), because the networking is now screwy.

I also have none of the e-mail configuration necessary for me to get my e-mail box off the network.

Basically, I'm 99% back to where I would be if I had just opened the computer out of the box.

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *head desk* Can I go home and start this day over again?

I need carbs. Terribly, sinful carbs.

And chocolate.

Seriously considered a margarita this evening. If only it hadn't been too damn much trouble to make.

That's AWFUL!

The Universe owes you BIG TIME. Like the lottery jackpot big time.

{{hugs}}

I hope that somehow, some of the problems will be less bad than they seemed.

The universe is a bitch, today. :(

And I got french fries and a chocolate bar today. I was bad and self-indulgent.

I picked up a virus over Memorial Day weekend and spent three solid days fixing/re-installing everything, so I feel this.

What you're describing happened to me several years ago, when I unthinkingly clicked "yes" to the update to new version? question that always pops up when I boot itunes. I lost 15 years worth of stuff, most not backed up (I know better now). But the tech guy told me that this can happen with a lot of programs. To be safe, you need to actually uninstall any old version of the program before adding or updating any software or a new version of any program (although that doesn't necessarily sound like it would've saved you in this case).

My sympathy.

Since AutoDesk is the cause of this mess, wouldn't it be nice if AutoDesk were somehow required to reimburse you for your lost files and lost time?

Like that'll ever happen.
