Whedonverse Stuff

Ran across this quote in a comment thread that was discussing places other than LJ.

"...Nothing we saw in season 2 of BtVS ever made me think that Angelus would have been anything but an inventive, elegant and sophisticated lover - well, as far as Buffy was concerned in any case..."

Oh, who am I kidding?  I've got to comment.

The only folks I could see agreeing with that assessment are Franklin Mott and Drusilla.

Elsewhere, read spoilers and it  looks like the Whedonverse comics continue to furiously dig themselves into greater depths of fail.  I kind of respect them for putting this much effort into coming up with new and ever more spectacular ways to suck.  It cannot be easy.  It takes a work ethic, people!   Respect it!

::Pets Whedonverse Comics::  They're like Chinese Crested puppies.  So ugly they're almost cute.  Never change, Whedonverse.  I'd hate to think there could ever come a time when I could actually underestimate you.

ETA:   Spoiler (as I understand it which is basically having read a comment about it online):  Turns out in one of the W-guys writing the AtS comics (meaning I don't know the difference between them, so basically 'Not Lynch') has the plot twist that  Spike lost his soul and didn't notice.  A plot that has, of course, been done many times in fanfic.  Though given the overall stupidity of the comics, it's a safe bet that it will not be done well.  Or with any thought given to characterization of anyone...especially not Spike characterization.  Don't know and don't care about the details of it.

Unless a wizard did it (by screwing with their personalities on soulless Spike's orders). Frankly, it would not surprise me now.

[identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
And inventive! How many boyfriends in high school can think of a more perfect gift than killing a girl's teacher and leaving her gift wrapped?

[identity profile] sockmonkeyhere.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! Y'know, they'd probably buy all ten thousand -- they're so thrilled with Willingham's comics that they're practically ejaculating all over IDW's discussion threads. It's a maddening thing to see.

It's crackfic. 'nuf said.

Yup. :P Half-assed is maybe giving them a little too much credit. I don't think they plotted anything other than B/A screwing.

Which we were supposed to be blinded by. Just blinded in an "OMG! OTP!!11!!!" way instead of "My eyes! My eyes! My eyes have be sporked by goblin-y 'toon sex in spaaaaaace!" (which will never stop being funny!)

Franklin was probably busy that night. Maybe dismembering the body in Jessica's basement or trying to knit his brains back together after Tara bashed his head in ruining his silky white pajamas. And after he'd shaved, just for her.

The silliness of it was really highlighted by the f@#k spellings used while the characters are supposed to be explicitly f$@#ing in the panels. It reminds of bad erotica with the authors talking about throbbing manhoods and weeping flowers because they can't bring themselves to say things outright.

At least they're being equal-opportunity in their attempt to destroy all the characters.

Upon further reflection:

A) I wouldn't put it past these lame ass comics.

B) It doesn't make a damn bit of sense (which doesn't negate point A. In fact might make it more probable.) Because continuity problems ahoy!

  • If Spike hired Hollywood hacks to write a faux prophecy, that wouldn't explain why the Twilight prophecy came true.

  • Didn't Giles say that a bunch of Watchers thought that this prophecy was coming true ages and ages ago and so committed suicide over it?

  • Does that mean that Soulless Spike runs across the Doctor and steals the Tardis, because that's some timey-whimeyness if he not only ghost wrote a prophecy that came true, but he managed to reinsert it into the past!

  • Exactly how stupid and inept is Giles supposed to be that he'd be hoodwinked by a faux prophecy written in modern L.A.. I mean, granted, Giles was sounding pretty stupid during the evolving intelligent design exposition dump, but this would make Giles yet more stupid. And... poor Giles.

  • Same thing with Angel. Because there was a fake prophecy didn't mean that he was forced to go out, murder hundreds of girl, and boink an apocalypse to get a happy ending. It just means he was stupid on top of all that

  • Which brings about the question of if it was a faux prophecy written by Hollywood hacks, how was it possible for Twangel to boink a hole in the universe to happyland? Did Spike use the Tardis to head to the Uncharted Territories to kidnap John Crichton to create wormholes for him?

  • And, really, does this sound like a plot a bit more complicated than Spike would resort to? Wouldn't it just be a hell of a lot easier just to stake Angel and grab the girl??? (expecially since it would mean that Spike wrote a faux prophecy specifically intended to send Angel into Buffy's arms and -- WHAT?! This sounds remotely plausibly Spike? Even Soulless Spike of "I had a plan. A good plan. I just got bored [and decided to hit Angel over the head with a 2x4 instead]"

But again, the massive stupidity and continuity fail of this, doesn't actually preclude this 'plot twist' coming about. Because, yeah, the comics are just that bad.

Problem being they are so vocal no-one else gets heard.

"...Nothing we saw in season 2 of BtVS ever made me think that Angelus would have been anything but an inventive, elegant and sophisticated lover - well, as far as Buffy was concerned in any case..."

Dead Goldfish are so sophisticated and inventive...

O.o Seriously that person's brain must have been fried at some point.

has the plot twist that Spike lost his soul and didn't notice

You know...this saddens me. I will say that if the show had gone on to a s6, I would have liked to have seen this explored. I actually predicted it (somewhere, and got hella flack for it), and it would have made sense with the storyline. The Liz Taylor necklace was supposed to be used for "cleansing," and was meant for Angel. If Angel had lost his soul, everyone and their mother would have noticed. But Spike? The implication that such a thing would have not made a difference in his actions in being a hero and champion--that would have been a hell of an arc, and a hell of a revelation for the show. In the right hands, it's a brilliant idea, but as it stands...

*shakes head*

I've given up on both comic 'verses. I expect nothing but a big, steaming pile of shit from them.

I hadn't heard of 'that' spoiler because I stopped following what's going on in the comics. Feeling so good about having decided so a while back.
furiously dig themselves into greater depths of fail Sounds a perfectly accurate definition of the situation to me. ;)

[identity profile] powerofthebook.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
These are excellent points, especially the wormhole. And yet we have MechaDawn...

I'm just praying that these comics stay non-canon, and that Whedon resists the urge to use the idea, that it's something other than that.

As if there isn't already enough WTF in the world.

[identity profile] berric.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to fall back on my constant hope whenever someone seems out of character.

Obviously someone has kidnapped Spike and replaced him with a Spikebot.
next_to_normal: (yeah right)

[personal profile] next_to_normal 2010-07-29 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course! Didn't you see the writing underneath that said, "And if not, I'm sorry! I'll try to do better next time! Waaaay out of practice, you know."

[identity profile] sp23.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think that goes without saying. LOL
next_to_normal: (twilight not kidding)

[personal profile] next_to_normal 2010-07-29 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, ooh! New fanwank! New fanwank!

So the prophecy is FAKE, obviously, because Spike and the screenwriters are making this up. Stuff doesn't happen just because you write it down. (And if it does, tomorrow I will win a billion dollars.)

If that means that all of S8 is actually just a figment of Spike's imagination and thus NOT REAL.... it might be worth it. Spike losing his soul is a sacrifice I'd be willing to make, lol.

[identity profile] sp23.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahahaha! Best. Comeback! Ever!

[identity profile] powerofthebook.livejournal.com 2010-07-29 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Thankfully, I wrote that before I realized it was Willingham who had penned the comic. Still, it makes me uneasy.

But hey, if it wasn't real, and just a wild daydream of Spike's - I might just be okay with that.
next_to_normal: (Buffy hee)

[personal profile] next_to_normal 2010-07-29 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I am imagining it like a cross between Angel's overblown fantasy in "Awakening" and The Wizard of Oz - Season 8 will end with Spike waking up and saying, "I had the strangest dream. You were there, and you were there, and you..." :)

I kind of respect them for putting this much effort into coming up with new and ever more spectacular ways to suck.

It's a hard job. They must sit around asking, "What can we do that tops space fucking?"
