Yeah, well, soap operas. There's a reason people make fun of them. Also there's a long standing tradition in romantic fiction - specifically operas and serials - with anti-hero characters becoming leads. It more or less started with Richardson's Clarissa, and Les Liasons Dangereux - two 18th Century novels with despicable scoundrels as the love interest. Luke and Laura if you think about it - doesn't end any happier.
Was never a huge fan of OLTL - it got repetitive and the whole Vicki in Eterna and then heaven thing? Ugh. They did, however, torture the heck out of Todd Manning, and explored all the angsty angles of that gang rape from every perspective imaginable. Soaps love to do that, they gave Whedon a run for his money on that topic. (Someone mentioned Luke and Laura, but honestly every soap opera has done it. Days did it just recently - according to promotional ads. My personal favorite was Guiding Light - which handled it the best.) On GH - it is worth noting that Sonny did not deliberately shoot his wife in the head - he shot his wife's kidnapper, Alcazar, and the bullet went through Alcazar and hit Carly, his wife in the head. (How in the hell could Sonny have predicted that outcome? )So, the word "accidental" does come to mind. Actually, Sonny's never deliberately or intentionally hit, gunned down, or physically assaulted a woman on that show. (Got to give them credit for that at least.) Days of Our Lives? Sigh. I gave up on it around the time they decided to go back in time and ride hobby horses. (That was more than I could take.)
I really wouldn't put it past IDW to give that sort of shout-out to S8
Agreed. Williams take on the comics feels a lot like parody, very tongue-in-cheek. He appears to be making fun of the series. Heck the title of his arc is "Immortality for Dummies" - if that's not a snarky title...
And it is the comic book industry, it's not exactly known for its maturity. The target audience of IDW's comics believe it or not is 12 year old boys. Hence the idea to do a comic book from Connor's pov and about Connor, with Angel's name in the title and Illyria hot for him, with a crazy uncle Spike for comic relief.
