Luke and Laura if you think about it - doesn't end any happier.
This is true. Just as long as she's not a wig on a mop, though.
I grew up on Luke and Laura and, unfortunately, kids don't question much so I didn't think of the problems with them just enjooyed the mystery of the left-handed boy and the campy ridiculousness of the Ice Princess (while I pre-teen lusted for Robert Scorpio and Noah Drake. :) I wandered a way some time during the Frisco and Felicia era, but returned again at some point. I don't think I ever really diveloped an issue with Luke and Laura until the Claire Labine era when there was a hit out on Sonny, and there was that really cool montage of Laura singing to baby Lulu as the house got shot up. I got rather hacked off that Luke acted as though Laura was unreasonable when Laura kicked him out after that when he wouldn't disassociate himself from Sonny. EVen then, though, I thought it was a decent storyline. What hacked me off mightily was when Laura took Luke back and he'd been a jackass the entire time, never acknowledged that what Laura was upset about was legitimate, and then they had her apologize to him over having kicked him out for just cause. Though I still remember Luke as being a half-way decent dad to JJ's little Lucky. I'm not sure at what point he pretty much became the worst father in the world, but, the last time I really checked in he was coming off as an incredily sucky dad.
Ti tended to wander around between the ABC and the NBC soaps based primarily on what the current storylines were so I missed the "City of Eterna" phase of OLTL and whenver the time travel phase was for DOOL. I did catch bits and pieces of Marlena being possessed by the devil and that crack was hilarious. JERk was a terrible, terrible, religiously screwed-up, misogynist writer... but he did bring the crack-fic.
I did watch OLTL back during the Roger Howarth era of the gang rape and actually that was an interesting storyline, and Howarth did good work with it. It got to be obcious after a while that he hated the character of Todd, and it had sort of become ridiculousness so I was completely okay with it when he left. So, I don't really think of it as RH's Todd that I hate with a white-hot fire. I completely agreed with Howarth that Todd was a sociopath and could enjoy him in that dark, screwed-up but compelling way. What has driven me away from OLTL repeatedly is when they try to sell Todd as a victim or hot guy. I dropped the show like a rock back when they had a scene of Todd raping his wife, but then they told the story that the rape that we saw didn't happen, Blair had just "misinterpreted" (because of course women don't know whether they've been raped) because she had a convenient brain tumor. I had about a 5 year hiatus after that. But I did return several years ago, only to catch the re-rape storyline where they hooked up Todd and Marty, when she had brain damage and the show got all 'surprised' when fans of the show started referring to it as the 're-rape' because somehow brain damage didn't sink in with the writers. I became so disgused with Todd at that point that ever since I've actively rooted for him to die a horrible death... but then OLTL did the whole diversity fail of firing all their gay characters and all but one of their African-American characters, and I was done.
And if the comics are penned for 12 year old boys... couldn't those boys go out and read "Holes" or something instead?
