shipperx: (Crichton - Still Have My Dignity)
[personal profile] shipperx

The hell-cough refuses to die.  I think I'm going to have to have a re-fill on the antibiotics because I only have a two day dose left, and the cough still isn't dead!

* I'm taking tomorrow off just 'cause (I have vacation days that are expiring at the end of the year so I may as well take some).  That gives me a long weekend.  And next week I'm only having to work Monday and Tuesday (I had been debating taking next Tuesday instead of this Friday, but hell-cough convinced me that rest sooner rather than later might be in my overall best interest).

* In the great wisdom of the Football Gods (and ESPN) the damn game this week is for 6:30 pm TONIGHT.   Having all but killed myself going to Saturday's game, I'm just going to have to burn this ticket (You can't give the thing away.  I've tried!  Been turned down four times.  No one wants to go to a Thursday night game where we could play our fourth string and still end up winning.)

* The Bama fan and the Auburn alum in me are in a tug of war over that Cam Newton scandal.  The Bama fan in me insists that if what's been more or less circumstantially confirmed is actually true, then it's pretty indefensible and Auburn fans splitting hairs about whether 'just' his father was involved are missing the point that it's against the rule (and repugnant) for a parent to shop their kids out to schools, so it seems that some sort of smackdown should  occur. On the other hand, the Auburn alum in me reads the rumors about what lurks under this particular rock (surely the rumors are too outrageous to be real.  Surely... ::fingers crossed::) and I'm appalled at how deep and how horrid this could actually turn out to be. If it really does reach as far as McGregor and Lowder (board of trustees at the university, one of which already under indictment for buying off legislators and the other part of an enormous bank failure and the morgage fraud that includes these days...and nearly cost the university its accredidation a decade ago by his having more influence over the school than its president), then it's beyond indefensible... so the Auburn alum in me desperately hopes that the 'larger conspiracy' is not true.   Surely it can't be.  Surely.  It reads like a Grisham novel.

Whether from illness or just ennui, I haven't been able to work on fanfic for weeks. It's hard to find Spuffy in the wake of the crap handed to us as the 'reunion'.  I keep reminding myself that the story I'm working on has been AU since before the comics started, but right now everything Buffy-wise feels tainted by the comic.  Did she ever care?  I had thought she had, even if she couldn't admit it.  Given how much she visibly doesn't care now, I have to wonder... was it just her way of balancing having used him in Season 6? ... But even that expresses more care than what's in the comics which amounted to "you're dying was studly, now shut up and let me take over your ship while I reduce Angel trying to kill you to a dick measuring contest."  Pushes Spike, flying towards the sun "Hope you don't go splat!" (that last statement is implied...).

LOL'd at The Middle last night as the dad performed the great feat of love of... watching Twilight: Eclipse with his teenaged daughter.   He's a good dad.

Also liked Phil bursting into tears on Modern Family  that his girls didn't need him any more with his girls subsequently bursting into tears that they can't handle that they made "Daddy" cry.

Still haven't settled on a Thanksgiving menu.  As it stands at the moment, Sis is in charge of the turkey.  Mom is in charge of the dressing.  I'm going to try to make a caramel tart as well as an arugula, pomegranate seed, and spiced pecan salad.  But that still leaves us several veggies short.  We'll need to nail down the menu this weekend for shopping lists.

Much, much sympathy on the cough from hell front! I just got back from the Doctors, and they put me on a different antibiotic. Might be worth asking your doctor about!

Of course she cared about him. To use a quote I believe is Jane Espenson's:

"If someone is there for you, is asking nothing of you and has loved you faithfully and unconditionally for all those years and if that person is the one that you turn to for comfort and support when you are at your most vulnerable, and if they give you that comfort and support unconditionally asking nothing in return, then whether you acknowledge it or not, that is love, so yes Buffy loved Spike."

Also, I hope you get better soon! *sends speedy healing*

I don't understand how Jane reached the 'so yes Buffy loved Spike' from the preceding section of her quote. I would
substitute 'so, yes, Spike loved Buffy, and Buffy used that love to manipulate Spike for her own ends'. On the show those ends were worthwhile, and Buffy gave Spike at least a measure of affection in return; in the comic the ends are dubious, the manipulation is cynical, and all she gives Spike is contempt. The comics have made me firmly believe that "No you don't, but thanks for saying it" was in fact Spike being acutely perceptive.

Good thing the comics aren't canon then, isn't it? Plus, he's admitted to forgetting major plot points on the show, so nothing should be taken seriously. :)

They're not canon? He's admitted this, then? If that's the case then we have to spread the news quickly while there are still some parts of the fandom that the comics haven't destroyed.

I think Elisi means, that large chunks of fandom don't consider them as canon.

I've always maintained they aren't and I don't care that Joss wrote parts and supposedly plotted the whole thing. It's a tie-in that only a fraction of the fandom will ever be aware of.

Unfortunately, being aware of the comics, I can't 'un-know' what's in them, so regardless of whether I want to consider them in the future as being part of the show canon, I still know how crappy they are and all the crappy things it has in it.

What shipperx said. Also they're comic books. I wouldn't know they existed if it wasn't for LJ.

That doesn't actually make me hate them any less.:)

They still suck.

Wish Jane had written the Spuffy reunion instead of the Riley one-shot. Then the reunion may not have been nearly as cruel as the one Joss wrote or as pointless as the one Allie wrote.

As low as my expectations were, I honestly never believed Joss would have a reunion that really sucked that badly (and I had assumed that it would suck. Just not quite so in-your-face awful as "You dying was studly, now shut up and give me your ship." After telling Angel that Spike was beneath him. There's just no way to take that but as a big middle finger directed at the ship.

I don't know that it's even that. It's just 'this ship is inconvenient, let's get it out of the way as quickly as possible so we can move on with the story'.

There really was no reason to have him there at all then. If the whole point was to make the ship a non-issue, it was before he arrived in the story. He's certainly had nothing important to do since except deliver exposition that rightfully, Giles should have delived.

And if the point was that the ship was a non-issue, there's still no reason to go for the extra twist of the knife in the guy as to have her tell Angel that Spike was beneath him. Joss wrote that. He more than anyone save a Spuffy knew how that would burn. And he chose to have that there.

I'm doing the veggies for Thanksgiving too. Cranberries (we're in Wisconsin, fresh cranberries are required by law) and a sweet potato and banana casserole that is amazingly yummy.

It's sad the number of people I've seen say similar things about the comics taking away their desire to write. I am glad I don't consider them canon. ;-) (not that I have written any BtVS fanfic lately either...)

I hope you feel better soon!

I look at the Spuffy angle in the comics the same way I look at the Connor angle. Now, the comic foolishness Angel is up to doesn't change the fact that he was the most important person in Angel's life despite Allie's assurances that Buffy means more to him than his own son. IMO, Spike is to Buffy what Connor is to Angel in the comics: inconvenient. They try to pretend neither relationship existed, but that doesn't change the fact that they did. At least to me. The more they try to say they didn't, the more they invalidate themselves.

My growing disenchantment with the 'verse itself I think has more to do with it becoming more and more evident that they guy who created it doesn't give a damn about it or the characters and that makes it hard for me to care either.
