I don't know about Kai not being able to find Erica in the future, but I have always assumed that in this 'verse, history is elastic enough to absorb most changes without them rippling back to the present. Like, for example, when Erica prevented Sam and Josh from getting back together, but then she returned to the present and Sam was still marrying him. Or how she's suddenly been friends with Cassidy all along, but Cassidy was conveniently never around, so it didn't really change anything except Erica has a bunch of postcards from her travels.
Anytime we DO see major life changes (like when she saved Leo or the one where she was rich), it always ends up getting undone eventually, so I don't think the universe will allow large-scale changes, at least not permanently.
I think this is why 2010!Kai doesn't remember Erica, even though other people obviously remember the new version of events. Because if Kai became involved with Erica in 2010, it would change his entire life, and he'd never OD and start therapy, so he'd never go back to meet Erica in the first place, and then the whole space-time continuum would collapse in on itself and Kai would have destroyed the universe. :)
