Grr!  Shut up middle aged white men whining on JOX because they can't wrap their heads around why an ESPN game announcer was fired because he dismissed a female ESPN reporter from a professional conversation at the Chick-Fil-A Bowl by calling her "sweet cakes" and then calling her an asshole for objecting to being called 'sweet cakes' and then refusing to apologize to her when ESPN demanded that he do so.  So far exactly one reporter has called in to say that the firing was an appropriate response.  Every. single. other caller and reporter has defended the guy.  *head desk*  (And this wasn't even his first incident doing this sort of thing).

ETA:  Wow, Arkansas was snakebit tonight.

Seriously. If I hadn't been at work I would have wanted to call in and tell them that none of them fucking get it!

Of course they are defending the guy - their just as stoopid as he is. What do you expect?

ESPN has a history of problems when it comes to sexist, racist commentary. I think it is their special thing....

Yeah. Most of the actual ESPN and sports reporters who called in said "Well, he shouldn't have done it, but he's a great guy and it was just a generational thing..." Like that makes his behavior okay!

(Maybe we should be surprised that ESPN actually fired him).

Truly, I'm constantly annoyed at the 'nice guy' defense. Lots of people are 'nice guys' SO WHAT???

It doesn't excuse racist, sexist behavior. Still, I'm sure it will happen again, on air, within the next 15 minutes.....

I second Paratti's WTF and add a *head-desk.*

Well, you won't see it mentioned on ESPN, that's for sure.

(JOX is our sports radio station -- and to show we're Alabama, it's actually the highest rated radio station in town -- so they don't have anything to do all day but talk and shit-stir.)

When are you going to learn that uppity wimmen need to learn their places and men that try to teach them should not be persecuted?!

To be honest, I hadn't heard about this. I've watched all the bowl games, but I don't pay that much attention to the announcers unless they're someone I already know, so I had no idea who this asshat was. And I watch college football like crazy!

Honest to God, this is a pale imitation of what one of the callers actually ranted!

Sadly, this doesn't surprise me.

And you know, I know WAY more women who follow sports religiously than men. Even the guys at work aren't big sports nuts.

Asshat, indeed.

Around here, college football is the ubiquitous culture regardless of gender. JOX is actually our local sports radio station... and far and away the ratings leader in town.

And so goes the nation! Really - what with the ascendancy of utterly misogynistic crap such as Jersey Shore, Bad Girls Club and all of the Real Housewives (about which I only know of from clips on The Soup), I'm surprised that ANY young woman complained about sexist behavior at all, much less had her employer do something about it. We've gone back to uphill battles against sexist pigs.

As Helen in Topsy-Turvy remarked, "The more I know of men, the more I like dogs."

Heh. I commented to my mother over Christmas that I've never watched a single episode of any of those shows, but I know from the commercials that I hate every person in them! (This is also true of "The Bachelor")

You'll be pleased to know that those same people are busy defending the Navy captain who made sexist, homophobic videos for the "entertainment" of the thousands of male and female sailors aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise.
