For a lot of these, it seems you like competence.

Could a common theme be "no bullshit"?

"The first lesson a watcher learns is to separate truth from illusion."

"Time -"
"- Bandits!"

"You're not mating with me, sunshine!"

"From now on, we're going to have a little less ritual and a little more fun around here!"

Hmmmm, So most of these folks are smart and curious, but know that they are far from perfect. They take responsibility for their mistakes, usually after a little grousing perhaps but they get there. Learn grow, try again, and become better people. Not that they're not still making some mistakes, but different ones. Their epiphanies stick unlike She-Who-Will-Not-Be-Named-Except-Under-Comic-Filter.

And these are folks that keep getting up off the floor and trying again. Oh, and they can truly love someone or some cause more than they love themselves. And count that as a privilege not a chore.

they get knocked down, but they get up again?

(it sounds ridiculous, but your list is somehow in-sync with the awful song "Tubthumping" which has been stuck in my head the whole day):D

I see thwarted characters, stranded characters, characters on what are probably fruitless and/or impossible quests.

There are also a few extremely strong female characters who are in bizarre, dangerous or unfriendly circumstances, all of which force them to be resourceful and brave. I have no idea what Sue Heck is doing in there (I'm sorry, I'm predisposed to dislike any character played by Patricia Heaton) but I guess you have your reasons. She's definitely not like the other women on your list, at least to me.

It's a very interesting list, to be sure.

Sue isn't Patricia Heaton. Sue is the perpetually enthusiastic (but so, so doomed) teenaged daughter. My heart aches for that child.

I don't know who all of these folks are, but the ones who I do--they are interesting, dark and compelling characters. Which is cool in my book ;)

Of the characters I recognize, you seem to have a thing for badasses, as well as love interests of protagonists.
