Just in case there was any confusion on the matter, Sarah Palin is not rocket scientist (or a historian... or a very good listener):

PUNDIT: Governor, last night there was a lot of discussion about the Sputnik Moment the President wants us to have. Do you agree with him? Is this our moment?

PALIN: That was another one of those WTF moments, when he has so often repeated, the Sputnik Moment, that he would aspire Americans to celebrate, he needs to remember that what happened back then with the former communist USSR and their victory and that race to space, yeah, they won, but they also incured so much debt at the time that it resulted in the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union so I listen to that Sputnik Moment talk over and over again and I think, no we don’t need one of those.

Sarah, does it physically hurt when the point flies over your pinhead?
LOL!

In a long line of incomprehensibly stupid remarks from that woman, this one does stand out.

To be fair to her...I found Obama's phrasing (or his speechwriter's) to be a tad strange. Isn't the point that we need an Apollo Moment?

I think that by referencing Sputnik it's more a call to action/wake up call for the U.S. It's about how we react in this moment as the U.S. did after Sputnik was launched, that there's still something to be won. An Apollo Moment, to me, would be more that the call has already been actualized, actions have been taken, and we've won something. We're still in the moment where things are uncertain and victory is not necessarily imminent. That's how I interpreted it anyway. We do need an Apollo Moment, but we're still in that Sputnik Moment. That point definitely could have been clearer.

I believe the point was that a down moment Sputnik... (or in our case a recession) inspires us to retrench, set goals and achieve a triumphant moment --> Apollo. I don't think the metaphor would actually work with Apollo, as the point is to go from where we are to an Apollo moment.

And Sarah Palin is a stupid as Bachman who said this last weekend that "Our founding fathers worked tirelessly until they fixed slavery..." Unless they were doing so after their deaths (and ignoring that many of them had slaves and didn't release slaves even in their wills after their deaths) we're back to... stupid.

How stupid can one woman be?

Never mind. The answer is all too obvious.
