Collective bargaining got outlawed in Tennessee the other day after teachers were warned not to begin protesting. The Republican Senator from Dickson said, "We will bend public education to our awe, or break it all to pieces." None of the news shows have covered it.
There's a ton of shit like that going down right now. Maddow had a piece on yet another Koch foundation that has cut and past legislation for all the tea party Republican governors. It's astounding.
It's all so disturbing. And the whole idea of letting a corporation conglomerate come into a town that's struggling (or the governor decides that its in a "financial crisis" and removes all the elected officials) and basically buy it is horrifying. We'll all be owned by the company store.
I sent Maddow an email through her show's blog about what's gone down here. The Governor passed legislation to make it harder to get tenure. He wants each teacher to have to be evaluated through a committee and process before they can get tenure... but there's no evaluation process yet... but the legislation has already been passed... which means that thousands of teachers in the state are now in a vacuum unable to get tenure and the Republicans don't seem to be in that big of a rush to implement, create, or even give vague ideas about what criteria and guidelines would be in the evaluation. Haslam says that these initiatives will save $16 million dollars for the state, but where's that money going? Is it towards the state budget or is it going to be doled out to his oil company buddies (Haslam and his family own the Pilot Travel Centers/gas stations) in the form of tax cuts?
