Date: 2011-04-16 02:41 am (UTC)Usually you can tell it's 'tornado weather' because it's strangely warm. Most tornadoes are on a stormfront where it's warm on one side and much cooler on the other, so before they come it seems unseasonably warm, humid... and strangely still.
Usually that'a accompanied with a line of severe storms. (Basically, it flash-flooded this afternoon for a bit. And there seem to have been a ton of tornado warnings going off).
Violent thunderstorms are rather common so we don't tend to react all that much to them. The weathermen take over the TV tracking storms. And adding to the general OTT stuff that makes us careless, if there is a tornado warning anywhere in the county the tornado sirens go off, which only teaches us to ignore tonado sirens (which isn't a good thing) because the tornado could well be thirty miles away (nor not even exist).
When you take it seriously is when the light/sky turns green. It really does. There's this weird greenish hue to the light and then you know you really should take it seriously (They say it has to do with the severity of the stormwinds hitting foliage and releasing chlorophyl, but who really knows.). They're also frequently accompanied by hail. So if it's hailing, you also take it quite seriously.
Otherwise, unfortunately, most people just shrug off the sirens.
The only time a tornado ever came really close, it sounded a great deal like a freight train.
The weird thing is, a tornado can hit 1/2 mile away and all you experience are cloudy skies. There may not even be high winds. It can be that localized. Although most of the time you at least have a severe thunderstorm and experience that.
It's pretty much been going on all day. All I've had here was about a 1/2 hour flashflood, followed by some rain. But watching TV there have been some high winds and downed trees elsewhere.

Date: 2011-04-15 03:11 am (UTC)They're the only hybrid tea roses that I have any more. I went through a war of attrition with the roses a few years ago, deciding only the non-fussy ones can survive. All the others are either antiques or shrub. But the Don Juans are very disease resistant and have a long bloom season without pampering, so they're allowed to stay.
