Casting Rumors

With filming soon to start on Game of Thrones' second season (which should be right after Comic-Con), casting news and rumors are starting to surface. And the most interesting rumor concerns the casting of a former Time Lord.

According to Den of Geek, the former 9th Doctor himself, actor Christopher Eccleston, is rumored to be currently lined up for a role in the second season of HBO's hit drama/fantasy series.

So what role could Chris Eccleston play IF (capital I, capital F) the rumors pan out to be true?

The 47-year-old actor could be up for the role of Stannis Baratheon—Robert Baratheon's brother and, according to Lord Eddard Stark, the rightful heir to the Iron Throne and the Seven Kingdoms.

The character of Stannis Baratheon was often heard mentioned during the series' first season but never made an appearance—just as in George R.R. Martin's book series A Song of Ice and Fire. Stannis first appeared in the second book, A Clash of Kings.

The other role Eccleston is also likely to be up for could be that of Balon Greyjoy—Theon Greyjoy's father and the Lord of the Iron Islands. {...}

Talking of Doctor Who, also rumored for a role is actor Tony Curran (Underworld: Evolution), who'd given a moving performance as Vincent van Gogh in last year's Doctor Who episode "Vincent and the Doctor." No word as to who Curran would play if cast.

Davos, maybe?  Or -- ooh! -- he's a red head.  Maybe Catelyn's brother Edmure?

Needless to say, Eccleston would make a rocking Lord Lobster.  (But I think Catelyn's uncle, The Blackfish, would be a better role  than Balon Greyjoy... although that probably needs someone older).

CE could do a great Stannis.

Tony Curran would kill the Red Wedding scenes as Edmure.

I was thinking that horrible day after day gallow's bit in AFfC. Sheesh. That was hellish. He could definitely do it.

And yes, Eccleston would do a great Stannis.

Ooh. I can see him as Stannis, though the Blackfish would work too. I'm sort of hoping not Balon Greyjoy- I love CE, and I loathe Balon!

And I'm curious about Davos; he's a favorite of mine.

I think he could rock Stannis but if his a Greyjoy I rather picture him as the priest of the drowned god. Isn't he getting chapters next book?

Curran could be Edmure or Sansa's fool knight?

Eccleston as Stannis - would be brilliant. Sort of want Jamie Bamber to play Edmure - more fitting. Edmure doesn't strike me as a strong character.
Davos? Too young for Davos. Also too young for The Blackfish - who is Catelynn's uncle.

Wish they'd cast David Tennant too - I could totally see him as Edmure or
Davos. Actually that would be fun - cast Eccleston as Stannis and Tennent as Davos!

Curran could be Balon Greyjoy. I admittedly can't remember Balon Greyjoy.
Clash of Kings is a complete and utter blur except for the very last two chapters.
