I've never been able to resist spoilers, so I've read the German 'leak' spoilers. And reading this: The tone is bleak, and occasional sparks of hope are quenched soon enough. The few things that are accomplished are soon turned to ash.
GRRM is not exactly known for lighthearted romps in his SF novels, so I'm not sure why people thought his fantasy would be different. I think the main reason I kinda gave up on the books isn't just that they are bleak, it's that they are bleak for a long, long, long, long time. If he'd condensed the series down to three or four books, I might have been able to slog through.
So true. It feels like he should be able to tell that a million peasants die, everyone you like suffers, and the gross people keep chugging along in a few less hundred thousand words.
