That's interesting what you say about "The Help" and dialect. I read it when it first came out, and I didn't find it distracting at all. I guess I must have found the book absorbing enough that it became kind of invisible to me.
Good luck with the fanfic! I am currently writing a similar kind of fic (first person POV character, not OC, but a character only spoken of in canon, never shown). In addition, it's depressing as hell and I have no where to post it because it doesn't meet the rules of the shipper communities I would normally post to. And yet, I am determined to finish it. I think stubbornness is as good an explanation as any.
