I figured they'd have to hit somewhere like Norway or Iceland eventually. It's probably helpful to have a place with glaciers. But does Croatia have something that can pass for the Red Waste? Or are they going to expedite that desert trek? (Not much happened during it anyway).

HBO’s Game of Thrones is expanding its production for season 2. You’ll recall the first season was shot in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Malta. The second season will continue to be based in Belfast, but the cast and crew are also going to Croatia and Iceland.
Croatia will serve for some of the Southern scenes, including most of the parts where Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is trying to raise an army. Iceland will be used for scenes “beyond the wall” as Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and his Nights Watch brethren explore the North. Needless to say, a TV show shooting on location in three countries is extremely rare — especially with CGI backgrounds becoming increasingly popular.

Croatia has some gorgeous areas that I can see being useful for some of the Free Cities (i.e. the cities across the Narrow Sea each of which had a different aspect to them, but which generally seemed to strike me as...
Well somehow in my mind "Old Valyria" (I may be mispelling that) which was the great empire that fell hundreds (a thousand?) years before GOT takes place has taken on a bit of Ancient Rome for me, as an equivalent fallen empire. So a lot of the Free Cities in the novel end up having aspects of say Instanbul, Turkey... Croatia, or in the case of Braavos something like Venice to them (I have to admit that Braavos is Venice in my head, no doubt helped by Syrio's accent in the show).
I could also see some of the more picturesque parts of Croatia being used as Highgarden (home of Loras and the Tyrells...although I had cast that as the Austria in my head. But Croatia could very easily work for Highgarden. Though I don't know how necessary Highgarden would be at this particular stage of the game. The Riverlands (home area of Catelyn's family) is important. Not sure where they're planning to stage that one because other than the river aspect, it didn't seem particularly distinctive. Perhaps that along with Winterfell is what is filmed in Belfast. They need an appropriately creepy creeptastic castle for Harrenhal though, which does appear in Book II and should be a place that should give the heebee-jeebees.)
