You know, I think there are more conservatives and right-wing moderates on livejournal and in fandom than we think. The fans who are liberal speak up very proudly about what they believe, so much so that we who are not liberal have come to think we are in the extreme minority. I do not think we are truly in the minority; we're just afraid to speak up sometimes. I have no desire to get into political debates, so I do not comment on others' political posts, but I do make some political comments in my own journal. When I heard that Reagan had died, the news prompted me to make a journal entry about it. I've received no comments on my post, but no one has defriended me either.

I agree that fandom and politics don't mix, but please don't feel that you can't say what you believe. I don't defriend people for making pro-Kerry or pro-choice posts, and I think most people in fandom are wise enough not to defriend you over this. If they are not, why would you want them reading your journal anyway?

Like I said to xionin: I had problems with a lot of what he did, but I like other parts. A lot. As a kindergartener, I was seriously called "a Soviet spy" and mistrusted by my classmates. Their raised-on-duck-and-cover parents probably saw the class photo. When tensions eased, though, the last name suddenly stopped mattering. When they saw Reagan and Gorbachav together, suddenly, everything was different. I'm not going to pretend that didn't matter to me, because some days were hell and I didn't even understand why.

(And this wasn't in some flag-waving Middle America town that was somehow telling their kids that my last name meant a five year year old was a spy; this was Eugene, Oregon. I have to wonder what it would have been like with the most-Russian-of-all-Russian-names somewhere else in the country.)

I'll say it too. I loved Reagan also, I'm also pretty Republican. So sue me. I just think everyone needs an open mind about these things, and not to take things so personally. Jeez, your political affiliation does not make you a bad person. Well, unless you use it to try for World Domination.

LOL Why does anyone who might like a Republican candidate on here feellike they might be defriended? Because I have been there! I caught myself putting any political entries behind CUTS, for criminy sakes. No one else bothers with that!

The man carried 49 states and got the highest popular vote, ever. If he ran against Clinton today he would win.

I read F.H. Burnett's A Little Princess when I was a kid, and I loved it. Of course, I dind't read it in English, so I didn't catch on until her name came up. ;-) Then, there's the whole orphan rich - poor - rich thing going on cf. Fred's journey. Plus, the possible education of Americans. ;-)

I too love the non-Wes/Fred parts, and let's face it, I watch for Marsters's acting, first and foremost. :-)

Actually, I had read your tribute, I just tend to suck at commentary. :)

And I do tend to feel that most of the non-liberal persuasion (I say non-liberal because I don't know exactly how conservative I actually am. I tend to consider myself a moderate. . .but probably I'm more eclectic than anything else. :) Anyway, those of a different stamp tend to keep more silent on-line. I'm not sure of the reasoning for it.

And I wasn't totally serious about the unfriending, because honestly, if someone unfriended me over being a Reagan fan they're a total wussy. People don't always agree on stuff and if that's enough to unfriend someone, didn't need 'em as a friend anyway. :)

I had a friend from Romania in the first grade. She got teased a lot as well. Don't remember anyone thinking "spy" just that because her culture was rather different from your generic small town southerner she was frequently thought to be somewhat odd.

I think, however, she and her family changed me for life. . . they introduced me to Star Trek. :D

Well, honestly, I wasn't living in great fear of being defriended by folks. I had just gotten a bit tired of reading lots of "I couldn't stand him" entries on LJ. My true feeling is that if someone unfriended me over liking Reagan then I probably didn't need such a wuss as a friend anyway. Really, a lot of people think and feel a lot of things. If that's all it takes to unfriend, then they aren't really a friend. :)

I know that some people dislike the whole "Fred as loved by all the men"-issue, but I think they're damaged by too much shippy fanfic. What about platonic love? :-)

I love Wes, and really like Denisof, but Wes is ooky. ;-) I think he's always been unstable, but really, I didn't dislike Wed or Fres (or whatever). I kind of liked the idea that he would fixate on her intelligence; and then, she was tiny so he could feel all manly protecting her. I'm told I scare puny men off. ::manic laughter::

I do love platonic friendship, and explored it massively in Three Lions and also through the Eyes Only collaberation. It is something underexplored in fic generally, I think.
