wildrider gave me the letter J.
Jason Stackhouse, True Blood
Okay, I've only read two of the books (which is far and away enough) but Jason in the books is a non-entity and a jackass. Jason of the show, however, is probably my favorite character. Yes he's more dumb than dirt but that's sort of his awesome superpower. He bumbles his way into doing the right thing most of the time. Plus... this:
Jorah (Ser), Game of Thrones
Sometimes in fandom we enter discussions about how much off a character is in the writing vs. what the actor brings to it. Jorah shows that the actor does bring something. I say this because in the books I liked Jorah okay, but his thing for Dany plays... differently (predominantly because Dany starts as, what? 13 years old in the books?) At any rate, Jorah is interesting in the books, and certainly book Jorah isn't incompatible with show Jorah. But show Jorah is book Jorah... plus badass and hot. I promise you, I never thought book Jorah was hot. This Jorah, though? Hot.
James Ford (aka Sawyer) & Juliet Burke, LOST
I don't think Sawyer is necessarily a great redemption story. I don't think they ever really did or could pull that off (though I enjoyed like heck that in his 'perfect world limbo' Sawyer re-imagined himself as a COP! No wonder Sun and Jin cracked up when they met him in the heaven hospital and Sawyer still didn't know. They realized Sawyer had re-imagined himself as a cop. Bwha! Then there's Juliet. She was always complex, a little mysterious. She could kick ass and even be scary, and yet there was something tragic to her too. She died thinking Sawyer hadn't really loved her. And he lived... knowing that he had. They gave me my favorite reunion of the finale. They were reunited in heaven! Yes, I know, cheesy and gooey and schmoopy and I do not care! I loved my schmoop!
At any rate, he was one of my favorite parts of LOST and he and Juliet certainly gave my my favorite part of the LOST finale. This scene made me cry real tears. :)
John Crichton, Farscape
What an arc. That's what's wonderful about John. When we first meet him he's a naive scientist, dressed in white, open with his feelings, and wanting to be a hero... and then Farscape really, really fucks him up. The poor guy just gets deconstructed. I don't think I really fell in love with John until he went certifiably insane (I'm not sure what that says about my viewing habits). But it was when he was breaking that made me appreciate him. They took this naive scientist who wore his heart on his sleeve to a black leather clad anti-hero fugitive who has to resort to near terrorism just to prevent everything from being shot to hell. (I love that sad, sad scene in We're So Screwed Part III: La Bomba where he says "Hey honey, guess what I did at work today? I wore a nuclear bomb in a field of flowers. I could get lucky and tomorrow I could have a bigger bomb. I could kill... more people. Maybe they'll be innocent people. Children. Maybe..."
Yeah, Farscape really screwed John up (and I loved him screwed up).
And since I'm on the crazy train...
Johanna, The Hunger Games(well, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, anyway).
She was strong enough to win the Hunger Games... and had all the mental scars to show for it. Angry, dangerous, heart sore, and did I mention angry? The Hunger Games took its toll on her, and yet... and yet... she still had the heart of a hero. I thought Johanna was awesome.
(No vid... but maybe when "Catching Fire" comes out).
