I've read a bunch of other speculation which sounds a lot more plausible to me, as Hollywood producers are definitely NOT sentimental or squeamish about a few animals dying on location and if necessary can and will move mountains to make sure no one hears about it. It's much more likely that this was an easy, face-saving way to end a show which had terrible ratings and was extremely expensive to produce.
Honestly, I have no idea why it was produced at all. Why did they think a series about horse racing with geriatric stars was going to fly with anyone?
