Basically to these types it's entirely "God says what I think" and has no relation to the philosophy that Jesus taught.

One of my issues with the church's of my childhood was that they were always so literal when it came to the Bible. You couldn't question. And it was clear to me (even as a history buff as a kid) that they had no context for when and how the Bible was written. It was "direct from God" crap and honestly, the Old Testament God is rather a fickle, mercurial asshole (plenty of old testament examples of this to be had).

I actually think that there are a great many wonderful things that Jesus of the New Testament (much like Buddha) is presenting...but fundy literalists miss it and are basically looking for confirmation bias for the own, narrow, judgement-filled world views.

(Seriously though, this kinda stuff just saddens me, because it's doubtful whether they'll ever be able to see beyond their blinders - and Christianity is all about love and joy, not hatred. *is sad*)

Yes; I'm always bothered by those who take the Bible as "literal Word of God" by ignoring what they don't understand and then taking the God they themselves call "eternal and omnipotent" and shoving him into its very narrow pages; unwilling to see how many PARTS of the Bible were cut out (by men) or added (by men) or even to admit that ordinary men wrote it in the first place (and don't get started on the books that may have been written by women!).

No, the Jesus of the New Testament doesn't say anything about hate; in fact, he says pretty clearly that people should do good, even if doing good (or doing right) breaks a religious law. In other words, he's all about civil liberties. Not to mention women getting proper medical treatment at Catholic hospitals...

Not the least of which is the total and complete lack of any archeological evidence that there actually were Jewish slaves held in Egypt... (not to mention both Egyptian and Chinese history that's much, much older than 6,000 years...)

There's an old comic/graphic novel called "Science Made Stupid" where the author shows clearly that the Bible and science work perfectly well side-by-side -- After all, Seth and Cain had "wives from elsewhere," so clearly "elsewhere" was their wives evolved while they came from their parents in the Garden. Problem solved. :)

I couldn't watch more than a minute. God lord, I have relatives like that -- and who are just as convinced of the righteousness of their ways. You see, as far as they're concerned, one should love thy neighbor, but those folk? They're just not your neighbor because there's no way they could be "nice" people's neighbors.

Dear lord, please grant unto your children the love and charity you speak of. Also, some of them need a clue as well. Amen.

What a hateful, snotty idiot! She's got just enough functioning brain cells to realize that Cooper's logic is causing her to paint herself into a corner, and it's pissing her off. I'm reminded of the Saturday Night Live "Weekend Update" episode many years ago in which the anchor (can't recall which one) reported on a similar case and added "A spokesman for God has quoted The Almighty as saying 'I don't know these people, I'm not affiliated with them, and I wish they'd stop using my name.'" XD
