I don't know. I've been in such a crappy mood the last few weeks that I don't know how objective my reactions are any more, but if anyone is interested:

Overall, not upset and not thrilled. I'm not sure what that means.

I suppose I should be happy that Spike has a story. Seems to me that Wes, in particular, is getting the big ol' shaft so far this season (and not in the good, slashy way. I tend to side with the suspicion that Lilah was supposed to be Wes' plot and without her, they really don't have anything to do with him. I tend to wonder though if we might see a Wes/Fred/Spike triangle somewhere. . .that is if they can't deliver on that [eyeroll] Angel/Buffy/Spike triangle. And, where has Lorne been anyway?

Anyway, at least he has a story.

Unfortunately, it's not a new story. Basically, dust off the "Torture Spike, strip Spike naked, have someone insult Spike." The ep in and of itself will probably be okay. I tend to like Stephen DeKnight's work... and given the usual SdK assignment, I suppose we should just be grateful someone isn't dead of having sex that makes you want to poke your eyes out. Still, it just makes me wonder (yet again) whether ME has completely run out of ideas.

At least Spike more or less does his own stuff this time and isn't waiting around for Buffy. And, again, at least he has a story.

Still, my feeling is that Spike is slated to be a ghost for a long, long time. That's just the feeling that the sides left me with. And, while it's ambiguous, my feeling is that Joss, Fury, et al are also saying "the sinful go to hell"... even if they do die to save the world... well, if you're Spike anyway. That's not to say that it isn't the Reaper guy who has been "sucking Spike into hell" in the first three eps. I just don't tend to thinnk that just because someone is the villain that they are necessarily telling a lie.

I suppose it can be argued that the reason for this is to put to a lie all of Angel's bitching about Spike not feeling guilty. This ep sort of hits the idea that Spike does suffer, etc. But, again, there is a "been there, done that" feel to Spike torture at this point. At least, SdK might make it a half way interesting retread. Too bad M.E. doesn't feel like actually doing something to shake things up and have things happen.

As for as Spike/Fred go... it doesn't bother me in the least. Sure, go for it. I'm far from convinced that they are. They are probably setting up friendship, but I'm open for there to be more.

In one respect I'm sort of relieved with the Spike/Fred thing. After the first spoilers, I was fearing that the part that made Spike so lovable would disappear. Part of what I love about Spike is his gallant sap aspect and without BitchBuffy around, no one for him to be a gallant sap toward. So friendship, ship, whatever, at least they are giving someone that Spike can be gallant toward and I ort of need that for good Spike characterization.

But not really thrilled with the ep. Still, not throwing a hissy fit either. Where M.E. is concerned, that is actually something of a relief.

I'm not thrilled with the ep for very similar reasons to you. I can see plenty of good things about it. Lots of Spike, for one thing, and the fact that Angel and Spike have a conversation that is almost civil, it seems, and that all the AI gang seem to want to help him, not just Fred. I like that we are allowed to get inside Spike's head.

However, like you, I am beginning to get the doomy feeling that we're going to be stuck with Ghost Spike for a long time yet, maybe all season, and I hate that. I feel it's just Joss's way of not dealing with all the messy problems that corporeal Spike would raise. If there's no sign of them making Spike corporeal by the time JM goes to do his movie, then I think I've lost hope. Joss thought of the ghost thing, and he's convinced it's a good idea because he thought of it. Also, like you, I am a little concerned by the lack of much for Wes to do so far. However, it also looks very much like Spike's current storyline is finished in this episode. I expect to see him put back into a holding pattern while some other character takes centre stage. Hope it's Wes - and hope I'm wrong about the permanent ghost thing.
