Various Stuff

Nothing new about my father. They're expected to come up this weekend. Mother called and said that the real estate agent had someone she wanted to look at their house (mother pushed her off a few weeks...which... why?!) Right now it's just a spot of terror and frustration that I try to push off to the side and not think about until necessary.
On a good news front... I'm in my Victoria's Secret pants! (That's actual pants not undies. These )
I had bought them months and months ago, but when they came they were too tight. Just enough too tight that I couldn't possibly wear them in front of anyone but close enough that I didn't send them back. They would provide motivation. Well, now they fit. (Of course I had ordered two pairs of pants and to show you how ridiculous sizes are, both pairs are the same cut, the same fabric, and the same size (supposedly). The khaki ones now fit. The gray ones are still too tight to wear in public. So much for uniform sizing.
My copy of Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars has still not arrived.
I finished watching Deadwood: Season 1. Very interesting show. I've ended up liking the Doctor a great deal. I like Joanie, Charlie Utter, Calamity Jane, and Dan. I also... like Al. Fascinating, complex, and utterly screwed up character that he is. I'm sure Fury would say that I'm just sick and like sociopaths. Yeah, well sociopaths can be interesting to watch (though Al really isn't a sociopath. He has weird areas of caring for others. In his twisted way he cares for Jewel, and some of his compatriots. And in his utterly screwed up and by no means laudable way, he cares about Trixie. Wouldn't want to know the bastard, but he's interesting to watch. Seth is quite the tightass. But, you know, it doesn't bother me. I think it's because for some weird reason I don't think writer David Milch idolizes Seth. I mean, I have such major issues with Buffy and even LOST's Jack because I can see that they have these huge jerk qualities, and yet I always have this underlying feeling (and in BtVS it wasn't underlying. They flat out TOLD us) that whatever they did/do wrong is excused because they are the hero. Whatever their flaws, it's just a 'minor' flaw, not an actual character defect. Whatever their transgressions, THEY are the "good guys." I didn't get that feeling from David Milch when he discussed the show in the extras. I think he sees what I see in Seth. Seth is "honorable" but that can be both good... and pathologically hypocritical of him. Seth is not a "bad" man... but he's screwed up too... just in a way entirely different from Al. So feeling that Milch sees these two opposing opposites as three dimensional characters, I don't find myself as resistent to Seth as I am to the likes of LOST's Jack or resentful as I often am of Buffy. So, good work, Milch. Interesting show. Wish I had HBO to continue watching. I will anxiously await Season 2 DVDs.
Forgot to mention Amazing Race the other night. Sorry the brothers were eliminated, but, amusing as they were (Bwha! At their stripping to their swimming trunks and ski hats when they were about to arrive at the finish line) they really weren't good races. Kudos to the oldsters Meredith and Gretchen for hanging on this long. Poor Gretchen looks like hell after her fall so good on you two for still being in the race. Uchenna and Joyce? Love those two. Awesome. Hope you win. Kelly and Ron? Kelly, you're a pain in the ass. Ron didn't tell you to "shut the 'f' up" but a lot of people watching the show probably did. Rob and Amber... it has to be admitted. They race well. They're a tough team to beat. I'm not a big Ramber fan, but I don't hate them. If they do win this thing, it will be because they've raced well. Lynn and Alex. Lynn gets points for being amazingly patient with Alex's crappy driving. So, good relationship boys... HOWEVER, Lynn comes off more and more as a jerk. (Alex is kind of funny though. [Chandler voice]Could he be wearing any more clothes?[/Chandler voice] Pretty funny that he put on all the clothes they had unless they came in last and -- like Meredith and Gretchen-- stripped of all their luggage). But Lynn is a jerk. "Other teams play dirty. We're just devious." WTF? What's the difference? And while I didn't really take Lynn's "Uchenna and Joyce are born to carry" line as strictly racist, it is indicative of Lynn's consistently insulting anyone who does anything better than them. It's like Lynn's overriding seething hatred of Rob and Amber. Yeah, Rob's tactics sometimes legitimately tick people off. However, Lynn obsesses on Rob, seeths about Rob CONSTANTLY. Get over it. Race. But then he also insults any team that does something, not just Ramber. He called Meredith and Gretchen "stupid." Hey, Lynn... I've seen you two make some pretty stupid choices yourselves. In point of fact, having Alex drive when he can't drive a stick. Alex seems to be okay. Lynn... not really any better than Rob. It's just that Rob doesn't obsess over Lynn the way that Lynn obsesses about Rob. Lynn, tone down the bitchiness a little. Thank you.
Speaking of bitchiness. I am a bitch. Sigh. Ended up in two ... er... debates(?) on BAPS. Sometimes I'm either dense or bitchy. I know I can be strident on occasion. But in both cases I just don't get it.
I posted "Major character death" in the subject line of a post LOST post and two people came out and started whining that I had spoiled them. Wha? 1) It was AFTER the show had aired. 2) It's pretty common knowledge that someone in the cast was going to be offed during the season on LOST. I didn't even say that some one had died in THIS episode. I didn't say who had side. I just posted that the mystery had been solved re "Major character death." And, again, it was after the episode had aired which -- according to BAPS policy going back several years now -- is when the "spoiler" label no longer counts. But neither of the people whining that they had been spoiled continue to say that it's spoiling. Er... uh... HOW? I know you might be in a different country, but BAPS policy is posted monthly. Those have always been the rules there. And, what's more, that a major character was going to die during the season is COMMON KNOWLEDGE!
Yeah, I'm short tempered these days.
Other point of controversy is the Peter David Spike comic. Look, I know people may not be interested in Halfrek. I know people may not want an evil Spike book (hey, I don't either). But I really don't get the visceral RESISTANCE to anyone telling a Halfrek=Cecily story. (And not just because I'm writing one). The comic is no more than professional fanfic. It doesn't effect canon. The writer can write whatever he wants. It's not a violation of FFL. No, really, it isn't. It's no more canon than the (usually crappy) BtVS novels which have blood tears and canon contradictions out the whazzoo. So I honestly don't get the angst that PAD has chosen to write about that subject. And, you know, with the dirth of Spike merchandise, maybe we shouldn't pre-judge. I'm not saying that the comic will necessarily be good. I may hate it. But I want to hate it for what it is, not what it might be. Peter David is actually a pretty good novelist. He MIGHT do something interesting (or he might not). I would like a little more info on his take on the story before I decide that it sucks. I'm not saying everyone should buy it, or that everyone should love it. I'm just saying, it might be nice to actually have a good idea of the ENTIRE story before we decide that it's trash.
Sigh. But apparently a lot of people have very strong ideas on this subject. I just don't get the whole Halfrek/Cecily controversy. It's something that can be played with as far as I'm concerned. I'm more concerned with it being set in Season 6 than that it involves Halfrek as Cecily. Because... sheesh. So what?
Anyway, have now finished my Carlene's salad (barbequed salmon on field greens with strawberries, orange slices, roasted pecans and garlic-honey-mustard dressing YUM!) and need to get back to work. I've probably bitched enough for today.
