Goddamned hurricanes!

It's another one and it's worse. I'm trying to talk my parents into evacuating... again. The beach house seems to be out of the direct line of fire this time, but even though at the moment it's looking like this one will hit New Orleans, Mobile and Gulf Shores are still in the projected target range. Last fall Hurricane Ivan hit there and came straight up the river to Monroeville where my parents' home is. This one looks like it's tracking west but it's still possible and shown in the red zone of areas in danger. And the storm is wide enough that even if it hits somewhere like Pascagoula it will still go over Monroe County. And unlike Ivan (last fall) and Hurricane Dennis (last month) which were Level 3 hurricanes, Katrina is now considered to be a Hurricane level 5 (right now it has sustained winds of 175mph gusting up to 213mph). It's a monster.

Having evacuated for Ivan and Dennis, my parents aren't really thrilled at the thought of evacuating yet again, and because Mobile is on the outer edge of the possible storm track, there's a chance that they're just in for really bad storms and not the full brunt of the hurricane. The problem is that when hurricanes hit the coast they wobble, and you really don't know the exact path they will take, either in hitting the shore or in going inland. (And along the shore, Mobile is only around 100 miles (as an airplane flies) from New Orleans, and the storm is something like 190 miles wide).

Mom and Dad said they'd keep an eye on the news and decide this afternoon whether to evacuate and come up here tonight. And it's not like I'm WISHING for New Orleans to be destroyed because, damn, this looks like it has the potential to be the nightmare scenario that's been predicted for New Orleans that could, potentially, sink the city. It's just that, damnit, can't the hurricane hit somewhere else this time?)

ETA: Unfortunately, parental units have chosen not to evacuate. I know it's terrible to hope that the hurricane stays on track, but I do. I don't want it turning east now. Since they are 90 miles off the coast, they shouldn't have any water problems. Now it's just a matter of hoping that the wind doesn't come their way.

ETA II: Thankfully parental units have rethought and are now evacuating.
