Storm Update - Early AM

Thus far, nothing much. Quiet night. It's just now beginning to deteriorate here.

Down in Monroeville, where my parents live, they're getting a direct hit at the moment so Mom is on the cell calling everyone in town (I got her to evacuate up here, so they aren't actually at their house. She's calling all her neighbors now).

And I just got the whole day off (they called me as 6 am to say they had decided not to have anyone come in. We had left work yesterday thinking it would PROBABLY mean that but it wasn't made official until this morning.

But, so far, here, there isn't much of anything to tell.

Mostly it wasn't. It went through faster than expected so there's been very little flooding except in flood prone areas. Most of the state, however, has no power tonight. They're getting some areas up and running, unfortunately not my house. I'm still sitting in the dark (thank goodness for laptops).

No real damage other than my neighbor's tree murdering my tree, but it's damn darn and eerily quiet now in the wake of the storm. Still, pending news on my parent's house in Monroeville, no significant damage. Just inconvenience. The city is in a fairly large blackout.

I read on Yahoo! this morning that Florida was hit worst and that Alabama survived relatively unscathed. How much longer does the hurricane season go on for, because this is getting ridiculous, isn't it?

I think the bulk of Alabama is mostly okay, but Gulf Shores Alabama is under water and Dauphin Island and Ono Island, Alabama have pretty much ceased to exist.

That's bad! Did people live in those places?

Yeah. Vacation homes mostly. Ever since Hurricane Frederick (in '79) people in the area take evacuation notices seriously. Not one life was lost in Alabama during this.

Well, that's something. Still glad that hurricanes are something I never have to worry about.
