In The Dark but Still Here

Well, all is quiet here... quiet and very dark. 3/4 of the state has no power. . . including me.

Re: The Beach House
My sister's mother-in-law was INSANE enough to STAY in the beach house (her house is a block closer to the beach and she was stupid enough to not leave) and she said the beach house is fine. Further to the east, Gulf Shores is underwater and Dauphin Island and Ono Island have both pretty much ceased to exist. But the Destin house of my family's seems to be more or less fine.

Re: My House
Here, my next door neighbor's tree cracked in two and fell onto the tree in my front yard splitting it in two. Power went out before noon and it's still out (and sadly... we've spent most of the day sleeping. I've turned into poor Rygel with his lucite game playing stick saying "I'm bored! Bored! Bored!!!). We did manage to get out and eat dinner at Waffle House which for some bizarre reason was open (and swamped) as soon as the storm let out. 280 has power again but everything close to me is still in dark. I just have a laptop and dial-up.

Re: My Parent's House We don't know about it. My home town got a direct hit with hurricane force winds and the people that Mom has spoken to (she evacuated to here so they spent the night with me) say the damage in Monroeville is pretty substantial. No one has been able to make it to their house so they just don't know. They're safe though and have been napping all day like me.


So right now I'm sitting by candlelight typing on a computer... hmm... quite eclectic of me. :)

Anyway, by and large everything is okay--let's hope things are okay in Monroeville.

I am very glad that you are safe and sound. I wasn't quite sure where you lived, but now I have a good idea. Now we need to cheer Ivan to the NE, where it can affect Jean and make her avoid Florida (or at least that's what I heard today).

I'm in Birmingham which is well inland. . .which is why we're a place that so many coastal residents evacuated to. It reduced to a tropical storm before hitting us. There's wind damage, and there was a fairly major mudslide over in Homewood where they're evacuating people because of unstable ground. I was always in a good place to stay though. My house is nestled between Red Mountain and Oak Mountain but significantly above the Cahaba River. And I must say that I was impressed by my house's construction because sitting inside we kept scoffing that you couldn't even hear wind and it just didn't seem bad. Then we walked outside and it was actually TERRIBLE. Just didn't seem like it.

So right now all is well... if eerily quiet and dark.
