The Ref Black Comedy with Dennis Leary, Kevin Spacey, and Judy Davis. Leary is a thief trying to evade being caught. It's Christmas Eve and he takes refuge in the home of a hilariously dysfunctional, unhappy yuppie couple. You end up wondering exactly who took who hostage. Dark, cynical and funny.
Grosse Point Blank Another black comedy. It's Martin Blank's 10th High School Reunion and he's thinking about actually attending. The thing is... Martin Grew up to be a paid assassin/killer for hire. More problematic (for Martin) is that he dumped his girlfriend (Minnie Driver) on the night of the prom and hasn't seen her since. Also, poor Martin is a bit... depressed (his shrink suggests not killing people might lighten his outlook. Jeremy Piven (cupid) plays his high school friend turned Real Estate agent who has no clue that his friend is now a hit man. Totally whacked (no pun intended) romantic comedy.
Restoration Robert Downey, Jr. in 17th Century during the year of the Black Plague and the Great Fire. (Meg Ryan is horribly miscast in the movie but has only a small role). He goes from buffoon to man of substance as he rises from student, to royal physician, to outcast, to insane asylum, to an actual adult against the backdrop of the reign of Charles II
Heaven Can Wait I'm really not a Warren Beatty fan... and yet I've always loved this romantic comedy of a football star who died before his time and who only wanted to play in the Superbowl.
The Heiress Based on Henry James "Washington Square," Olivia DeHaviland plays a plain Victorian heiress of a loving (but domineering father) who is romanced by fortune hunter Montgomery Clift. Lovely morally gray story that asks some interesting questions.
The Lion in Winter Kathryn Hepburn, Peter O'Toole. If you love clever banter and machinations, you'd love this movie of battling royals.
The Awful Truth Cary Grant and Irene Dunne play a wonderfully sophisticated couple on the verge of divorce who have already struck up relationships with others... which they constantly sabotage. Clearly these two are meant to be together... regardless of the fact that both refuse to admit it.
