* I don't know what it was that hit me last night (low grade fever, chills, ache in my bones, headache from hell, general ick) but I'm feeling much, much better today.

* Best summary I've read of the current Buffy comic (I also still perversely enjoy reading the whole darn thread laughing that people are still debating who the 'ultimately betrayal' might be. And people argue that the writing is clear... )

* Sheesh. I've lost track of time. SEC Championship game is about to come on. Gotta go.

Now, admittedly, I haven't read it, just the summaries of it, but from the sounds of it, they didn't have time to make sense have significant character moments because they had to rush on to... boring us.

Ooh! Look, it's a 'Becoming' redux. Glad they bypassed character moments or coherent plot development for that. Let no dead horse be unbeaten.

(NOTE:  This is not in response to any one person's post. There's no point by point correlation between this post and another).

I've read a few posts regarding Buffyverse 'selfishness' and whether or not Buffy is 'selfish' .  Sometimes this question is bundled with the question of whether an assessment/accusation of 'selfish Buffy' has to do with gender.   One thing I find myself wondering is whether we're talking within the 'verse or within the fandom.

Within the 'verse, I think Buffy has a fair amount of slack.  It comes from being the protagonist and thus the writer room mantra that 'everything is about Buffy.'  That mantra has a way of highlighting and featuring Buffy's problems while mostly using other characters' problems as reflections or shadows.  There's nothing wrong with that, but it does seem to weight issues such that Buffy's woes are most important and at times other characters problems aren't given as much attention. That's not the character of Buffy's fault, and more often than not, the other characters don't see this part of the narrative.  So, on the rare occasion that one character or another has an issue with their problems/angst/woes being sidelined, I cut that character some slack.   It comes with the package of "It's about Buffy" and sometimes you've gotta give other characters the right to chafe about it.

On the other hand, are we talking about fandom assessment of character?  That's a slightly different issue.

As a rule, I'm quite reluctant to dismiss accusations of fandom gender bias.  It exists and it can be hellaciously ugly.  On occasion, when I have dumb moments and visit Televisionwithoutpity.com's "Mad Men" threads or "The Big Bang Theory" threads, it  is virtually impossible to ignore the underlying gender bias fandom can display (often in ugly ways).  TBBT's thread constantly denigrates Penny to a truly astonishing degree (Seriously, what has the character or the actress ever done to be hated this much?  I don't get it.)  And it's often astounding just how easily some fans turn on characters such as Peggy (and then there's Betty who, granted, Betty is a basket case, but come on! Horrible parenting aside, she isn't actually Cruella DeVille.  No cute spotted puppies were destroyed to make her impeccable clothing).  Then there's the viper pit of Supernatural fandom which, though I've never been a part of it and have only casually watched the show, I've witnessed some epic misogynistic smackdowns chronicled on fandom_wank that drip with so much gender bias and gender self-loathing that you can only shake your head in dismay.

But, um... (WARNING: Potentially controversial statement ahead),  I think there are times where gender bias cuts both ways. There are times when I think fandom cuts Buffy more slack because she's a girl (as well as there being times when she's cut less.  Both things happen regularly).

I've been thinking about this for a while, mostly when watching this season's Mad Men and primarily because of the MM depression plot.  This season, Don Draper was a depressed mess.  He was in a downward self-destructive spiral, illustrated by boughts of rough sex, self-loathing, bad choices, and other examples of self-destructive behavior. There was actually enough overlap that it made me think of the plot arc of Season 6 BtVS, where some of the same things were featured in Buffy's character arc.  However, fandom reacted to these arcs quite differently.

There have been many times when Buffy's choices in Season 6 are either said to simply be because someone else was exploiting her or there's Marti Noxon's oft-repeated blanket excuse whenever fandom pointed to something Buffy did that was less than laudable:   "She's in a bad place!"    Well, yes, she was.  But she still made choices of her own free will.   Sometimes for some people it boils down to one thing: "Buffy was depressed."   And you can't hold that against her...   Right?

It's been striking, though, how fandom has reacted quite differently to Don Draper's depression.  Everyone recognized Don Draper's depression (frankly, it was impossible to miss).  Most fans wanted him to pull himself out of it and became frustrated as it went on so long (just as happened with Buffy in Season 6, only Mad Men has only half as many episodes as BtVS did for Season 6).  What was different in Don's case, however, was that in the man's story there was both the recognition of his depression as well as fans continuing to consider him to be fully accountable for his choices and actions.  He wasn't given "he's in a bad place" as an excuse for bad choices.  It was the context, but not a reason to dismiss his personal responsibility for the things he does and does not do.  Reactions tended to be "Shesh.  I get it.  He's depressed, but SHEESH!  That was a jackass move!"    Depressed or no, Don was still seen as making his own choices, taking his own actions, and, while depression was motivation, it was never viewed as justification.  We weren't encouraged to view him as a victim of circumstance or to think of his choices as being out of his control.  Yes.  Don was depressed.  And yes, he often behaved like a jackass.  Sometimes the answer is that both things are true. With Buffy it's sometimes addressed as "she was depressed."  Full stop.  And I don't know that this is the most empowering route to go... and, I think the reason that it is sometimes treated as explanation enough is partly because she's female.  It's more acceptable to view a woman as passive, as not in control, as more easily undone by her emotions, and as victim of circumstance than it is to see a male protagonist as victim.  It's easier to say that the woman is subject to what's going on around her.  And... I don't like thinking of female characters in just that way.  Context matters.  Oh yes, it does.  But it's not the whole story, nor does it negate free will.   I don't think it's awesome for fandom to consider females as being inately more passive and more subject to their emotions and circumstances.  In fact, when female characters just float along passively, it annoys me.  (See: just about every female character on Supernatural who isn't evil or dead.)  Yes.  Buffy was depressed.  Yes. Don was depressed.  Yes, depression influenced their choices.  But, they're still their choices and actions, whatever the fog they make them through.  If we can allow both those concepts with male characters, are we truly serving a female character by thinking she's less capable of owning her actions and impulses?    Are we cutting extra slack because 'she's a girl' if we decide that she's 'just' a victim of her own emotions and her difficult circumstances, when it's probably somewhat more complicated than that?  I don't think I've ever seen anyone in fandom excuse Don for the less savory things he's done(forgetting his kids, blameshifting, being a dog to girlfriends, being overly curt with friends like Peggy)  because he was depressed.  It's still him.   It's still her.  It still choices and actions they made.  It's part of them, even if it's not the whole picture.

Sometimes, I think we need to be careful in the ways in which we exhibit gender bias.  Sometimes it's cutting a guy extra slack for being 'the man!'  Sometimes it's in our being overly willing to see the woman as passive, lacking control, or as helpless and thus less responsible for the that choices she makes.  (It can actually occasionally become a tad infantalizing.) Sometimes, in terrible cases, there is slut shaming (Look, out of all the things Buffy may be, a slut is not one of them. And, yes, that's taking into account space frakking and ill-timed sex fantasies. We may wish she made different choices sometimes, but none of those things make her a slut.  Not even a little. Not at all.)  And sometimes fandom goes in to full bore yuk because some 'girl' is standing between them and their fictional character fantasy (see Supernatural  and its fanfic pairings or even some of the -- miraculously even more odd -- Sheldon-fans on TWOP's TBBT [seriously, Sheldon/Penny are friends. I honestly don't get the Penny hate!])  Anyway, long way around to saying, I think it's okay to allow female characters to own some less admirable traits.   Even if it's occasional selfishness or selective passivity (which isn't a good thing).  I don't think of that as disempowering.  I think it's granting the character their own power of self-determination.  A truly empowered character is allowed to screw-up, to not always be a model of good behavior, to not be 'just' a victim, and to own up to making their choices-- good, bad, or indeterminate. That's what gives opportunity for growth and change and (psst!) character arc.

Sometimes characters screw up.  Sometimes they can't see beyond their own POV.  And, yeah, sometimes they're selfish. The laudable character -- male, female, robot, Sebacean, demon, Slayer, Tribute, or Klingon-- is the one that tries to grow, learn, and overcome their flaws.  That, to me, is the best critieria by which to judge them.  JMHO.

1. Trahan Architects -- you suck! Get over yourself and your possessive tendencies. The clients can pick whatever the hell they like. (Okay, that was just for my own venting. No one has to understand it).

2. Spare me passive aggressive co-workers. I have been in charge of my office's renovation (in my mother's vernacular -- trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear). I have a perfectionist boss and the office has been in chaos for the last 3 weeks (and I do mean chaos. If we have pictures I'll post them because it has to be seen to be believed). Anyway, we finally got the office in something resembling order except for one VP's cubicle. Every day for the last two weeks the boss has gone by said VP's cubicle (Now unfurnished because we took out the furniture in the renovation) and told said VP that he needed to get his cubicle together. Then the boss comes over and tells me to get said VP's cubicle together (as said VP's crap is absolutely EVERYWHERE in deep piles all over his cubicles... and no furniture). In this perverse daily routine I go to the VPs area and say "tell me what furnishings you want for your area and I will arrange for them to be bought so we can straighten out your area." Said VP always replies "Not right now. I'm busy." I then offer, "If you're busy, I can do." VP: "NO! Don't touch my stuff. I'll put it up." I'm offering to go get the furniture. Tell me what you want. VP: "No! I'll take care of it later." Okay, this sick sad dance has been going on for three weeks now. My boss has reached the "seriously griping about it stage." For this entire week he has wanted this done YESTERDAY. This morning boss came to my desk. "We need to clean up VP's area. It needs to be done. " So, I go over to said VP's area, to continue the dance. "The boss wants us to clean up your area. You've had 3 weeks to 'think.' Tell me what you want. Do you want desks, counters, drafting table, tell me so that I can order them." No answer. "D----, just give me some idea what you want so we can at least put in an order so that we can tell the boss that we're doing something." No answer. I wait. "Just ---" Said VP gets up and walks RIGHT past me to the print room. When he was returning from the print room I blocked his path. "Are you ignoring me? Are you SERIOUSLY just not going to acknowlege that I'm talking to you?" VP: "I'm busy right now!"

If this guy was my boyfriend he would have been toast after this passive aggressive bullshit. As it is, I threw up my hands. Stomped into the other room and fumed to a few other co-workers. Then I fumed to the office manager (and anyone who is the least bit aware in our office about the office politics knows good and well what is said to the office manager is siphoned directly back to the boss-- it's a good way to get your complaints known. The office manager said that I had been a borderline saint in dealing with this VP the last few weeks because of this. And I did also tell the boss that VP won't tell me what furniture he wants in his area, and by "not tell" I mean he literally WILL NOT tell me. Boss basically said that if VP doesn't have it done by Friday that we will do it for him (Frankly, I'm for leaving the guy the hell alone and letting his sit on the damned carpet!)

1) The SMG controversy. Boo-hoo mean ol' ME and Joss pissed on SMG's "generous" offer to show up for the finale. Er... folks. That's not what's happened. I have had three separate sources who have independently told me that it wasn't ME that called a halt to this farce -- it was FOX. SMG was asking for way too much money and demaning way too many "star" concessions and FOX basically said "see ya!" Now, I'm not clearing ME. I think Joss probably cackled at the power move and the way it ended up. In a totally unsubstantiated way, I've gotten the impression that Joss has had just about enough of Ms. Gellar. And, in a lesser way, of Buffy. I don't thik that Joss has LIKED the chracter of Buffy for a long time. I mean, he knew -- he absolutely KNEW -- how insufferable Buffy's Season 7 speeches were. Good grief, the show made fun of those speeches in Storyteller... and they just kept writing them.

Guys, that's not wanting a character to look good. (Although I also stand by the stiffness of Buffy being more than what was written. There were so many things SMG could have done more, but whenever it came to a choice of showing Buffy as vulnerable vs. snotty, she chose snot. (Case in point the little sneer in "Never Leave Me.")

Besides, Buffy has NEVER fared well on trips to AtS. She was a selfish child in IWRY where, for all that Angel's choice was stupid and paternalistic, we were supposed to see it as noble and self sacrifing with Buffy being naive. And Buffy in "Sanctuary" was insufferable(foreshadowing much of her behavior in Season 6).

Buffy on BtVS at least had the excuse for her egocentrism in that the story was all about her. On AtS she has never been presented as something...well, frankly, AtS hasn't shown Buffy as a particularly generous person. She was childish in both eps. And it's entirely possible that Joss, having been stuck with the impossible situation of two vocal fanfactions in Spuffy and in Bungel... and being the sadist that he can be, will do the "A pox on both your houses!" as a ship conclusion. Very Jossian -- hah! Neither of them get the girl! (Which is fine by me because I consider both vamps to be more enjoyable). I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's not framed such that Buffy is the golden girl the boys have to leave behind because they are about to go all "death, glory, and sod all else" Buffy gets her "happy ending"... and the boys are doomed. It fits with the way that Buffy always gets her "out"... while Spike and Angel get to pay and pay and pay without getting much of anything in the way of happiness.

The funny thing is, this ends up making Buffy less interesting to me.

Anyway, SMG isn't showing up because she asked for a whole hell of a lot and FOX told her to stick it. It's nothing more than that. This ball on this one fell in FOX's court.

2) Regarding Spuffy and Season 7 commentaries... You know, I've discovered that I don't care any more. Now don't get me wrong. I'm one of the ones who still care PASSIONATELY about the character of Spike. It's just that as the Whedonverse comes to a close, I find that since the writers only have a couple more eps during which to yank my chain, I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Once "Not Fade Away" is done, ME cannot do a single damn thing to screw with Spike any more. He's ours then, only to live on in fanfic.

I remember BAPS's Laurie's comment about another show (either the X-Files or Forever Knight, I forget which) when she said that with the show over "The writers can stop mucking up our universe," which is how I feel about the Whedonverse these days. Once they are done with the characters in Not Fade Away, Spike will become ours. He will be owned by the fans who love him (because I honestly don't give a fuck what Ducks and Antis think once it's over). So whatever Joss says? Screw him. With the series finale, all that will be left is the fandom and the Spike fandom will belong to Spike fans.

Also in the "I don't give a damn what they say" is the whole Spuffy thing. I don't give a damn what they say in commentaries. I saw what I saw. Joss can't do his half-assed commentaries excusing what sucked and still try to give cookie crumbs to opposing factions. The point of fiction is that the writing speaks for the author, not the commentary. Joss's Buffy (and Spuffy) aren't in the commentaries. We each have our own reaction to the end of Spuffy (or whether we see it as an end). I know what I saw and Joss can't make it better NOW.

My Spuffy is dead, autopsied, and buried. I know there are Spuffies still believe, and I feel for those Spuffies. And in a way I almost admire their way to still find something good. There's something noble in trying to find the gold in the dross. For me, as long as I don't have to witness Bungel I can deal. Spike realized in Chosen that she never did and never will love him in any dependable way and I've seen nothing this season that contradicts that for me. Joss can't toy with my Spuffy heart any longer. My zombie Buffy heart got decimated a while ago.

3) In other fandoms... is it or isn't it a hoax? Okay, believe it or not, there's actually a writer and producer I hold in greater contempt than I do Mutant Enemy. This (wacked out, sick producers) would be Corday Productions and James Reilly. Both suck in truly amazing, amazing ways as any sane, tasteful person who has witnessed the travesty that has become "Days of Our Lives." Okay, overlooking that they killed my teen fangirl crush "Jack"... the show has been on this bizarre serial killer storyline. How on earth they can justify murdering Alice Horton -- sweet little white haired lady who has been with the show for 35 years is nuts. That they did so in such a stupid, lame way (she was choked on her own doughnuts) is disgusting. And worse, I know that Dorkday and Jabba (that would be Reilly) think it was "witty." Anyway, so I signed on the other night and a friend of mine IMed me that apparently the whole serial killer thing was a massive hoax storyline. That somehow or another they are bringing back all the serial killer's victims on the show (neat trick since Jack was not only murdered, but his cancer ridden (shh! We're not supposed to remember that) organs were donated to other people. It reminds me of that old Sally Field soap movie "But we decapitated him!" "We can write our way around that." My friend swears she has really good sources and that they are very close to Matt himself. Today when cruising over by another board I saw that soap reporter Sandy Reinhardt is saying that this "and they bring back all the dead people" plot is a hoax (meaning that the show isn't bringing them back). Time will tell. Have to say, I sort of hope they don't come back, because if they resurrect them, if for no other reason than to laugh my ass off, I'll tune back in to see how they resurrect them, and Days is a truly awful, awful, shamefully tacky show now. It's stupid. It's sad though because as stupid, cheesy and awful as it is... I'd tune in for this resurrection.

Time will tell. Which hoax is the actual hoax.

4) In the happiest fandom news... I'm still on a "Farscape will return" high. Woo-hoo! I love Farscape! A show where writers and producers and ships DIDN'T let me down!
