Okay, have spent my 2003 Rave coupons and ended up seeing "The Life Aquatic." It was...um... unique? I think it will fare better as one of those movies you have in your DVD collection that you know really well. It has some funny bits. It has some interesting bits. And it's just overall, a little strange. Still not quite sure what I make of it.

Saw the trailer for "Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy" and the trailer pretty much sucks. It basically just has "Don't Panic" and then the earth blowing up which, of course, makes perfect sense if you've read the book. It's just that it doesn't really give the people watching the trailer the sense that this book is all HUMOR.

The other trailer of "He's predicted this doom..." with the ultra-serious voice then the reveal that it's a little cartoon animated Chicken Little did come off as funny.

I also managed to hit the stores and got one of those 187ml tiny bottles of champagne and some chocolate truffles. This image of stylish decadence if of course blown by the fact that I'm sipping from my champagne flute while wearing a white t-shirt, charcoal yoga pants, and fuzzy slippers. I'm a real party animal.

I also bought black-eyed peas for tomorrow (and what the hell is THAT tradition all about? I've never understood it, but since I like black-eyed peas it's never an imposition to go out and cook them on New Year's Day. I even got the fresh ones so I'm going to try to do the Highland's Grill version of them.)

Anyway, Happy New Years everyone.

I just cannot get into Wes Anderson. I think he's one of the most self-indulgent filmmakers around. I've tried Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums, and I thought they were both awful.

Aviator was pretty good, if only for Cate as Kate Hepburn. She was amazing.

I've actually never watched the other two movies. This was was an odd pastiche in that it really did look like those old Jacque Cousteau movies. And there was that stylized way underplaying of events. It was like action adventure as acted out by documentary commentators (which is what they were going for bit it's. . .odd.)

I still would like to see Aviator. It's just that it was an hour longer and started an hour later. I didn't particularly care to stick around for that long and I had to use the coupons today.

Oh, and the best thing in the movie is Jeff Goldbloom near the end telling Bill Murray (re: their mutal ex-wife Anjelica Houston) "We made terrible husbands. Of course I have the excuse of being half gay."

Happy New Year!

I thought the Hitchiker's preview was craptastic too. I rang in the new year watching Garden State with my husband.
