BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The Birmingham Zoo's 3-month-old baby orangutan finally has a name, Nairi, thanks to another youngster, 5-year-old Evan Lucia.

The north Shelby County boy is the winner of the zoo's naming contest for the baby orangutan, who was born Dec. 13.

Evan and his mother, Andi Lucia, and 18-month-old brother Silas were at the zoo late this morning, hoping to see the baby and her mother, but the shy animals stayed out of sight in a shadowed corner of the zoo's primate exhibit.

Nairi means 'kind one" in the orangutans' native country, Indonesia, Andi Lucia said. Evan choose it because it sounded cool, his mother said.

The zoo's contest received hundreds of entries, and the zoo's senior staff picked the winner, said Mindy Wald, the zoo's special events coordinator. Participants made a minimum donation of $2. Proceeds will go to Orangutan Outreach, an organization providing care for orphaned orangutans in their native habitat.
