Well there you go the no so big character death. Boone is now a dead Boone. Guess it shows an utter disinterest in the character that he wasn't the center of even his own death episode. Yep, his entire death throes were ALL ABOUT JACK.

The need to chop his leg off? About Jack.

The desperate need to save Boone? About Jack.

The stalking off at the end to hunt down Locke: About Jack.

You know, Jack is borderline narcissistic working on meglomania. Chill, Jack, you really aren't the center of the universe. No, really. You're not. Trust me on this (and don't listen to anything the producers might say to the contrary).

Claire holding her breath to keep from having the baby (yeah, that'll work) was amusing.

Sawyer's concern was... I like Sawyer.

So to sum up:
Jack - full of himself
Sayid- pretty
Sawyer - pretty
Charlie - cute
Locke - mysterious
Boone - Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead (and manages to prove Wrongda worthy of her name due to her insistence that the "major character death" would be a major tear jerker. Character dead... and not a single tear to be shed by this eye. Not even close).

I felt bad for Boone, but didn't cry either. Looking back at it, you're right that the episode was really all about Jack. Interesting.

YEah, and the writers even admitted it today. Apparently the whole plan was to put Jack and Locke at odds since they are the two "leaders" of the island.
