Seriously, dudes, what in the hell does it take to convince certain people that this has become insane and ENTIRELY out of hand?

From the LA Times:

A 2-year-old Kentucky girl was accidentally killed by her 5-year-old brother who fired a rifle he had been given as a gift, officials said Wednesday. Cumberland County Coroner Gary L. White said an autopsy of Caroline Starks showed the toddler had died from a single shot from the .22-caliber rifle. The death has been ruled accidental and no charges will be filed, he said in a telephone interview with the Los Angeles Times.

“Most everybody in town is pretty devastated by this,” White said. “Nobody wants to take anyone’s guns away, but you’ve got to keep them out of harm’s way for the kids. It’s a safety issue.”

Five-years-old, people.

FIVE!

I know that there are people who have taken to using 'guns' as both their woobie and their mou-mou, but I think it's now officially in the provence of pathologically motivated criminal negligence. Some 'freedumbz-loving' idiot gave a loaded gun to a five year old! The damn thing is even marketed by its manufacturer as "my first gun" (and I am so totally not kidding).

Charges need to be filed against the asshole who gave a five year old a fucking loaded gun!

The NY State SAFE ACT actually does have a clause - which permits the State to file charges of manslaughter for instances like this. If this happened in NY State - the person who provided the child with the gun would be doing 5-10 years. And a hefty fine. With their gun license revoked.

NY State just passed the strictest gun law in US history. Conneticutt recently followed suit.

People stupid enough to let a five-year old play with a working gun, whether they think it's loaded or not, are too stupid to have kids in the first place. Gah.

The story only gets worse when reading it. After showing the child how to load and unload the gun with live ammunition, the parents left the room 'for several minutes', leaving the little boy 'playing' (With. A. GUN.) with his toddler sister.

If that poor child had shot his parents rather than his poor baby sister, I'd say it was a Darwin Award.

Criminal negligence is right. I can only hope the person that gave this five year old a loaded weapon is prosecuted. That little boy is going to have to live with this the rest of his life.

I'm kind of speechless over this.........You have to be 16 to drive a car....19 (I'm Canadian) to have a beer, 18 to vote, get married sighn up in the military.....but you can get a gun at age 5. WTF is wrong with this picture! Why are there no age laws for this kidn of thing?
Definitely Criminal negligence. I feel for the 5 year old though....he has no idea really what's going on and this is something that will effect him for teh rest of his life.

Yeah, I feel for the child. No way does a five year old understand enough to grasp what was going on. To a five year old EVERYTHING is a toy.

The child was just a child.

The parents, however, horrify me.

Fuck. Just fuck.

You need a license to drive a car, but a five year old can get ahold of a gun.

I guess it's because no-one thought to write an amendment to the all-powerful American constitution that a well regulated and mobile militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and drive vehicles shall not be infringed. /sarasm!!

I can only think the framers of the constitution are rolling in their graves thinking "But we thought you guys would have some goddamned SENSE and be reasonable about things!"

Too bad he didn't shoot his idiot parents instead, though that poor kid is going to be traumatized for life no matter what. And of course I'm sure his asshole parents think shrinks are for sissies, so they'll never get him any help.

I can't believe no charges have been filed, or that the DCFS hasn't stepped in to remove the boy and any other children.

Oh! And at the risk of offending people, let me just say that anyone who thinks this was God's will and "she's in a better place" is a complete flaming asshole. This was human stupidity and negligence, and if I weren't an atheistic lapsed Jew I would say God has a special hell just waiting for those dumbfuck parents.

Sadly, I'm willing to bet that they're the "but she's in heaven with God. It was his WILL" types.

How Bible-thumping and gun-worship got mixed together, I don't know. But they have become so far too commonly.

To be honest I've more or less given up being surprised by anything to do with America and guns.

My first thought this morning, when I heard it, was what are the chances that someone will now decide to market bullet proof baby-gros?

In some corners it's truly crossed the border into sickness. Guns have become fetishized by a group of increasingly obsessed people. (And, of course, the billionairs who make money off of them...)

See now, what happens next is they market guns for two year olds so they can defend themselves...

I will NEVER understand the mentality that says everyone has to be armed. Never.

That's because it's long, long passed the point of making any sense. But we can't apply any reasonable COMMON SENSE! Noooooooooooooooo. To have common sense would be tyranny! *spit*

Horrible. Those poor kids.

Apparently the sheriff has dismissed it as, and I quote, "one of those crazy accidents." Because when you hand a loaded gun to a five-year-old, him firing it is apparently an accident. Well, at least he's right about the crazy bit. And about it being just one of many.

I know! Jeez. The kid is five, people. FIVE! The kid had absolutely no understanding of 'death' or 'permanent' or 'it's not just like tv' -- HE'S FIVE!!!!! What sort of sick stupid parents give a five year old a real live gun?!

That's no 'accident'. That's criminal negligence (at the very least). It's also unfit parents because, jesus. HE'S FIVE!

When the murder of rooms full of five year olds couldn't get us a ban on assault rifles, I honestly don't think there is ANY atrocity horrible enough to get us gun control. Sometimes I get so depressed at how a small group of ferociously dedicated (and free spending) individuals has so much influence on our government. Just UGH!

I don't understand how charges are not being filed if the parents gave the five year old the gun themselves and left him unsupervised
