Watched the tail end of Mortal Instruments on whatever cable channel it was on last night.

1) That move is sooooooooo bad.

2) My only real knowledge of Cassandra Clare (author of the series) is the memory of the plagiarism kerfuffle on Fandom_Wank. (Apparently there was a big wank in the Harry Potter fandom re her fanfic or something.) Anyway, it's very obvious that Mortal Instruments began its life as Harry Potter fanfic. Clearly, this was a Draco Malfoy/Hermione fanfic with the serial numbers filed off and which turned Hermione into Voldemort's child. (Couldn't decide whether "Simon" was supposed to be Harry or Ron, though.)

And it's all ridiculously bad, and not in the 'so bad it's good' sense. Just...really badly acted with horribly trite dialog.

I tried to read the book, but I said Nope about 30 pages in. Yes, trite. [nods]

I was just surprised by how recognizably Potter fanfic it was. Seriously, you could pinpoint who was who!

I read a scathing chapter by chapter recap of that book but I think I've blocked even that, lol.

The only entertaining part of the movie was trying to place who was who from the Potterverse.

Draco and Hermione were painfully obvious though. This wasn't even good fanfic... but it was obviously fanfic. Seriously, there must've still been tiny impressions where the serial numbers used to be.

The only piece of her work I'm familiar with are her Secret Diaries of LotR heroes. They were hysterical and instant fandom classic.

Never was much into HP so never took interest in anything else.
But the way she went from writing fic to making a movie with Aidan Terner(!) was impressive. Have to give her that. :) Wouldn't touch the movie with a bargepole though.

Legolas: Still the prettiest.

:)

And, yeah, got to hand it to her for taking fanfic and making lots of money from it.

Cindergirl made me watch that with her. I kind of enjoyed it for the pretty people, and the production values weren't bad. I didn't expect much and wasn't disappointed. ;-) It took me forever to recognize Aiden Turner, though! I'm not sure why he looked so different to me, but he did.

I know! He didn't look all that Mitchell-ish. He just looked... familiar.

There seems to be a lot of former Harry Potter fanfic now published as YA with the serial numbers filed off...another one I read about is Half-Bad, which is Snape fanfic.

Okay, now I'm confused - what was the YA series that you sort of liked that they were going to make a film of? City of Bones? I thought it was the Mortal Instruments...

They're making 'the fault in our stars' movie. Haven't read much YA, basically the Hunger Games, City of Ember, and Ready Player One.

I think City of Bones is one if the Mortal Instrument books.

City of Ember was the one. For some reason I thought that was part of the Mortal Instruments series. Apparently not.

Haven't read that many myself. Actually only read Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Ready Player One and Fault in Our Stars. Liked Ready Player One the least...and Fault in Our Stars the most. Have Divergent on the Kindle - but haven't gotten in the right mood to read it. YA is hit or miss for me.
Gets angsty and sort of over-the-top.

I heard it was Draco/Ginny fanfic (Clary's hair is red), an Simon is supposed to be Harry. I've been trying to listen to the audiobook of City of Bones while on my plane rides, but it puts me to sleep. There supposedly is a fun incest scare somewhere, and Jace beats the Brother-zone. Good for him. It should be noted that he looks like a Lannister, so he's got that going for him,

But the lead girl is a muggle mundane who has powers and later discovers that it's due the fact that she's Voldemort's Valentine's secret daughter...?

And VoldemortValentine tells Jace and Clary that they're brother and sister, but Jace is like "no problem" (actually he says he doesn't believe it, but basically he seems like, 'Yeah, I've seen Jaime Lannister. As long as I've got a hand, I'll just go with it.')

I read the first book in Mortal Instruments (yes, it's "City of Bones") without knowing anything about Claire or the kerfuffle or anything else, and I did make it all the way through and went, "Meh." Never bothered to go looking for the second book (like I did with the "Hunger Games" and, for that matter, "Harry Potter"). I guess I can see the Harry Potter-ness of it, although that wouldn't have been my first guess, what with the vampires and demons and tattoos. I just thought it was pretty standard YA "heroine is Someone Special (tm)" trope with a pretty "meh" twist and pretty "meh" characters.

None of them had as much personality as ANY of Rowling's characters.

Felt like the demons were rather dementor-like in the movie. No vampires (that I saw... which was only the last half) in the movie but lycans werewolves. The "Institute" even looked Hogwart-ish in the movie.

Seriously, I wouldn't have given the book a second thought if it hadn't been for all the hoopla about it. Extremely forgettable.

From the movie I could see why. Pretty standard stuff (with really, really bad acting and dialog in the movie).
