Watched the tail end of Mortal Instruments on whatever cable channel it was on last night.

1) That move is sooooooooo bad.

2) My only real knowledge of Cassandra Clare (author of the series) is the memory of the plagiarism kerfuffle on Fandom_Wank. (Apparently there was a big wank in the Harry Potter fandom re her fanfic or something.) Anyway, it's very obvious that Mortal Instruments began its life as Harry Potter fanfic. Clearly, this was a Draco Malfoy/Hermione fanfic with the serial numbers filed off and which turned Hermione into Voldemort's child. (Couldn't decide whether "Simon" was supposed to be Harry or Ron, though.)

And it's all ridiculously bad, and not in the 'so bad it's good' sense. Just...really badly acted with horribly trite dialog.

I read the first book in Mortal Instruments (yes, it's "City of Bones") without knowing anything about Claire or the kerfuffle or anything else, and I did make it all the way through and went, "Meh." Never bothered to go looking for the second book (like I did with the "Hunger Games" and, for that matter, "Harry Potter"). I guess I can see the Harry Potter-ness of it, although that wouldn't have been my first guess, what with the vampires and demons and tattoos. I just thought it was pretty standard YA "heroine is Someone Special (tm)" trope with a pretty "meh" twist and pretty "meh" characters.

None of them had as much personality as ANY of Rowling's characters.

Felt like the demons were rather dementor-like in the movie. No vampires (that I saw... which was only the last half) in the movie but lycans werewolves. The "Institute" even looked Hogwart-ish in the movie.

Seriously, I wouldn't have given the book a second thought if it hadn't been for all the hoopla about it. Extremely forgettable.

From the movie I could see why. Pretty standard stuff (with really, really bad acting and dialog in the movie).
