My nephews and niece came over to watch GOT with...well, in theory it was Mom and myself, but Mom couldn't give fewer shits about GOT.  So basically, they came over to my Mom's house to watch with me.

To tell you the truth, we were talking and not as normally invested (obviously, for obvious reasons).  And, since we were all book readers anyway, between the distraction and the talking, we more or less simply assumed that it was the same as the book.

It wasn't until I saw the online reactions that I processed that it was different.

Having read the comparisons, honestly, the book scene comes across to me as if Cersei HADN'T consented, Jaime would have done it anyway. So it strikes me as pretty dubconny either way. It reminds me of the Spuffy "Gone" sex - Spike does consent, but if he hadn't, well....

True. And since the book scene is entirely his point of view and GRRMartin utilizes unreliable narrators... The scene was always, always problematic. The comments we were making while mostly missing the scene were along the lines of: "You KNEW the Cersei/Jaime dead incest kid sex was going to be gross and disgusting!"

In general, though, I tend to be harder on Book!Jaime than a lot of fandom. (I never found his Brienne insults to be the bicker/banter fun kind.)

But, yeah, here they seem to have made it go from dubcon to completely non-con. I can understand why big Jaime fans are upset (But I always found him somewhat difficult to like).

Of course it doesn't help things that show!Cersei is a more developed character than the books. In the book, frankly, Cersei has no redeeming qualities whatsoever (sort of like her eldest son. Book!Cersei is stupid and sociopathic). The show!Version has at least has a soul (even if a rather twisted one).

For me, not having read the books, it hardly made me blink, in that it didn't seem at all OOC for either character in the show.

On the other hand, any scene where a woman says no but ultimately meant yes (which is what the director of the episode said was going on) is problematic in and of itself. I hate SR, but at least Joss didn't make that mistake.

Looking at it purely as something that happened in the show, without the real world implications, it doesn't change my view of either character (and I do like show Jaime and felt sorry for Cersei in this episode, it must hurt to realise that no one apart from yourself mourns your murdered child), nor will it stop me watching. But I do understand why some people are very upset.

Thoughts and best wishes to you and family.
