Amazon is offering a free trial of "Kindle Unlimited" with access to both free kindle books and free audible books.

From AOL.com:

SEATTLE (AP) - Amazon is rolling out a new subscription service for Kindle devices that will allow users unlimited access to thousands of books and audiobooks for $9.99 a month.

The company said Friday that the Kindle Unlimited service will give users the ability to read as much as they want from more than 600,000 Kindle books such as "The Hunger Games" and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid." They can also listen as much as they want to thousands of Audible audiobooks, including "Water for Elephants."

Subscribers will get a free three-month Audible membership.

A Kindle Unlimited logo will be attached to eligible titles. The subscription service is available beginning Friday and is accessible via Kindle devices or with Amazon's free Kindle reading apps. A free 30-day trial can be accessed at www.amazon.com/ku-freetrial.

Yeah, I can't even read all the books I have now. The last thing I need is to shell out $10 a month for *more* books I don't get around to reading. LOL

LOL, yeah. Assuming you remember to cancel on time so you don't get charged for the *next* month.

Any words from the authors? Could they opt out of that deal? What are they paid for the flatrate books?

Looking at it, it seems to be primarily old imprints, beginnings of serials, or ones that have very, very few reviews. I know the .99 ones (that aren't just novellas) frequently disappear once they get a few reviews, so the 'service' may be largely promotional in nature.

I just wish that the big publishing companies would agree to their books being used, at the moment the books being offered on amazon.co.uk lending library is a VERY poor selection. I was talking with someone about it yesterday who saw it as a similar set-up to Netflix and argued that you can't expect the latest bestsellers to be included, but my argument was that Netflix does still have a great selection of quality tv shows, even if they aren't always bang up to date.

If the lending library could included the back catalogue of known authors like for example Stephen King (obviously not his latest books, but the older stuff) then I would be all over it, but as it is I've never heard of any of them! Well except for the Harry Potter books that they always make sure to mention. Otherwise it's mostly just trashy romance, thrillers, and self-help books

I have noticed that the "Amazon Unlimited" is a more broad selection than the "Amazon Prime."

I took the free offer of Amazon Prime for a month last month and discovered that there aren't enough borrow-able books to bother. Unlimited seems to have more books (but tend to be older books or beginnings of serials.)
