Top Chef/ Top Design

Top Chef - wasn't surprised by the winner. I was spoiled.
Top Design - Okay, for me this feels different. With things like Project Runway and Top Chef, it's just about reality tv. But design? This is what I do. This is what I know, and I think that will make me hypercritical. Anyway,
Wow. That was obvious. I had no question which one would win and which one would lose. The winning solution was completely impractical, but they're basically designing a display. That's all those white boxes were. On a display level, the winning design had interest. It was very editorial, but I could buy that ending up in Elle Decor (which doesn't do much that is practical anyway). The loser was also obvious. It looked very "Redbook" decorating. The green was the wrong green. It looked too pedestrian. It didn't look high end. Nothing is wrong with looking like Redbook Magazine's decorating section, but knowing that one of your judges was editor from Elle Decor would tell you that it wasn't going to pass her editorial eye. Elle has its own look, as does Todd Oldham, and these things tell you a great deal about which way the judging will lean.
On a different note, what ridiculous budgets. Then again, if you're "shopping" out of a design center, you would expect to pay insane prices. It's not all that surprising (and that makes me more critical. My reaction was with that as their budget and their resources that's all they could come up with?!
And the client was... er... orginal. I'll leave it at that.
Finally, what in the hell has happened to Todd Oldham's face? Is it the bad plastic surgery or the spray tan? One or the other or both makes him look like a mannequin. And, Todd... you're no Heidi Klum. Who would have thought that Heidi would have a better speaking voice AND more personality?!
