I hate to say "well at least this one is west of us" because it's still going to hit people, and apparently hit people HARD. The computer animation of what could possibly happen to Galveston is scary.

I just got done chatting with my sister-in-law down in Edinburg, TX (near McAllen). They're all getting prepped, since that's one of the projected paths of the hurricane. So she's been scrambling around getting stuff at her office secured while her husband is out doing some last minute grocery shopping, picking up some boards, and making sure the cars have full tanks.

Hope she stays safe.

Hopefully the Galveston seawall will halt major damage to the town -- it's designed to roll storm surge waves back over onto themselves, and the town sits on top of it, like a castle near the edge of a cliff. (New Orleans, in contrast, is set lower than its levee wall.)

South of town, though, the wall stops, and the beachfront houses and other buildings there will probably take a huge pounding.

There's probably no way to avoid lots and lots of damage. At least it's reduced to a 3 and isn't hitting Galveston head on.
