Music Takes Us Back
Jun. 16th, 2006 02:30 pmMusic seems to form weird connections in our heads. Sometimes you hear a song and it takes you back to whatever you were doing at the time it was popular. Some songs remind you of high school or college. And some songs remind you of the height of certain fannish obsessions.
I hit AutoDJ on my MusicMatch today and it picked up an old mp3 file on my computer that, when the song played, took me back to Season 5 BtVS. I remembered board wars on Fan Forum and on Cross and Stake (Oh, there were Spike haters even then. SilverAgent was already fuming all over the place) And I already loved Spike and was beginning to board the Spuffy train. Somehow this song connected to that moment in time and that fannish obsession even though the song was never used on the show. Somehow the song became associated, which made me think of a few other songs that reminded me of certain ships, fandoms, and specific moments in time. I thought I'd share
BtVS
Thief
Sample lyric: I don't understand this horror/ there's a weight in your eyes, I can admit [...] As the world explodes, we fall out of it/ And we can't let go... because this will not go away [...] And I can't see that thief that lives inside of your head/ But I can be some courage at the side of your bed/ And I don't know what's happening, but I can pretend that I could be yours[...] Someone help us understand who ordered this disgusting arrangement -- time and the end/ I don't want to hear who walked on water/ the hallways are empty--clocks tick/ As the world implodes, we fall into it/ and we can't go on, because this will not go away...
Don't ask me how, but this became very associated with Spuffy in my head, and it just brings memories rushing back. Also associated with Spuffy in my head (and a very Season 6 Spuffy at that) is...
Outside
Sample lyric: You bring me to my knees... again/ All the times that I could beg and plead in vain/ All the times that I felt insecure...for you/ and leave my burdens at your door/ I'm on the outside, I'm looking in/ But I can see through you/ See your true colors/ 'Cause inside you're ugly, ugly like me/ I can see through you/ See the real you [...] All the times that I felt like this won't end -- it's for you/ And I taste what I could never have/ It was you/ All the times that I've cried/ My intentions, full of pride/ But I waste more time than anyone/ 'Cause I'm on the outside, I'm looking in/ But I can see through you/ See the real you...
But it's not just BtVS fannish obsessions that some music reminds me of. There are several songs that remind me quite strongly of the period of time when I wrote X-File fan fiction -- somewhere between Seasons 6 and Season 8
X-Files
Bent
Lyric: If I fall along the way/ Pick me up and dust me off/ If I get too tired to make it/ Be my breath so I can walk/ If I need some other love/ Give me more than I can stand/ And when my smile gets old and faded/ Wait around. I'll smile again[...] Can't you help me? I'm bent/ I'm so scared that I'll never get put back together/ You're breaking me in/ And this is how we will end/ With you and me bent...
And, of course
The Sky is Broken which is the only song which I understand why I associate it with that period of time. It was the song used in the background (and foreground at the end) of the episode "Small Things." Lyric: The sky is breaking, it's deeper than love...
Oh well, anyway, thought I'd share songs that somehow personal way-back machines for me.
