Well, today after basically being way negative about AtS, I've tried to strive for a more positive outlook. It's not easy. Anyway, not sure I can convincingly be positive about future spoilers so I'll just comment on tonight's ep.

I enjoyed AD's Wesley a great deal. I thought it was a long overdue Wes Centric episode and I like the casting of his father. The only part of the ep that I didn't like was that I thought that the teaser ran a bit long.

I also cannot STAND Eve. It's not that the character in theory couldn't be intriguing. I think this is an execution not a writing problem (Hey, I'm saying something isn't ME fault!) Eve is just fingernails on chalkboard to me.

Where Spike's concerned, I'm bi-polar. The problem is, he's funny. Spike IS funny. His lines made me laugh every time. So I enjoyed him as funny. It was amusing... so why is the other half of me upset that he's the comic relief? It didn't bother me when Angel is turned into comic relief about killing HIS father. Sigh. I suppose it's my Spike issues. I empathize with Spike too much and it throws everything off kilter. Spike would no doubt be quite amusing to a casual fan. And I did find him amusing. And none of the lines actually offended me. And nothing in the way he was shown actually offended me.

I just miss Spike's heart. I want to see the heart too, and the heart of Spike just isn't showing up in the spoilers. I hope to god it's somewhere on screen. I think I would have fewer issues with Spike tonight if I wasn't in a black funk over spoilers. I'm rather humorless about Spike's story... which in theory I find so wrong. There's no fun in a character when you can't poke fun at a character. But somewhere I've lost the ability to be blithe about Spike and have become dour and humorless. It's not right, but there you go.

So I found Spike funny in tonight's ep... but like I said, I'm bi-polar about it.

I wish I had some small degree of trust left for Mutant Enemy.

So, all in all, tonight's ep was a good one. I liked it. I have no real criticism of it.

But I still don't trust ME one tiny little bit.

Agreed

I so agree with you on just about every point.

Eve is doing nothing for me. They need Lilah. Lilah playing this part would be perfect, IMO.

And Spike. I love him. I always have. But I miss that poignant, moving Spike. The snarky, funny Spike is ... snarky and funny and I am so glad to have him. But I miss his heart.

Well said.

I haven't seen the episode yet, so it's hard for me to comment. I have seen up to and including episode 6, and 6 was the first time that I really found myself agreeing that Spike's characterisation was 'off'. Up to then, I'd been all right with it. I think we'll have to see how things change once he's been unghosted. The ghost thing hasn't worked since Hell Bound. Basically, the character is trapped as Angel's annoying ghost sidekick, and it doesn't bring out the best in him.

I wonder if ME are aware of the level of discontent there is over the way they are portraying Spike?

I wonder if we're doomed to a writing staff that can't sustain the complexity of Spike. He's either all suffering heart or all snarky humor, when what we really want is the blend that we've seen in the very best episodes.

Don't read the Sparklies thread about 'Manny' or then you'll *really* get depressed about how ME is writing Spike. *sigh*
