Date: 2006-05-25 03:09 am (UTC)Maybe. But I need to watch it one more time to figure that out myself!
I know I had to spend half the episode Wikipedia to figure out a lot of it...like Penny's father is Charles Widmore whose name has run rampant throughout the show from the company that employed Michael to the food in the air drops to the manufacturer of the pregnancy test on the plane to one of the corporations attached to Hanso.

Date: 2006-05-25 05:13 am (UTC)I do have a thought about Hanso, though. 'Hanso' is an anagram of 'Noah's', so perhaps that are trying to bread an entirely new race. You know, wipe the slate clean? And maybe they are testing the elctro-magentic stuff in the hatch, so when they are ready, they can unleash it on the rest of the world?
Just thoughts.

Date: 2006-05-26 12:09 am (UTC)Bwa! Is it horrible to admit that I was hoping that the boat would blow up & kill him?
Bernard better watch his ass next season.
Heh. I thought that big piece of metal that fell out of the sky was going to crush him dead.

Date: 2006-05-26 02:35 pm (UTC)I don't search out spoilers so I don't know about Desmond. If I stumble across anything, I'll say.
I did read Ausiello the other day, and he was directly asked about Eko and Locke. He said as far as he knew, both were still contracted as regulars next year.

Date: 2006-05-26 03:22 pm (UTC)I gotta admit that Desmond is a far more interesting character than Ana Lucia was ever conceived of. I hope they haven't killed him off along with Mr. Eko.

Date: 2006-05-26 12:04 am (UTC)What an episode. Same reaction from me -- wtf?? Well, I probably had a few other reactions, such as ' I wish that boat that Michael and Walt are on would blow up'.

Date: 2006-05-26 03:11 am (UTC)hobbit's (whathisname?)Charlie's history as an alter boy before he got all corrupted by sex, drugs and rock & roll, and culminating with Locke's loss of faith unleashing the apocolypse (a cautionary tale) - and other examples I can't recall. I wish I could remember everything because I'm not doing her rant justice - not nearly - but she was talking so fast and I was so tired that I couldn't keep quite keep up. But she's very indignant that the supernatural component has turned out to be a lesson in the precedence and power of Christianity. I weakly pointed out that the shot we saw of Syed praying suggested that the message wasn't overtly Christian but more about a non-religion-specific faith in a higher power, and genuine power of that higher power, but she dismissed Sayed's display as a token crumb tossed into the mix in a attempt to dilute the overwhelmingly Christian message.I wasn't watching nearly as closely as she, and confess I was in the kitchen making dinner for the first half and just listening to the TV with the sound turned up.
My only *Ah-Ha!* moment was at the end, concerning that electro-magnetic energy release. I believe that it was the electro-magnetic energy that shielded the island from outside detection. Remember when whatshisname (former prisoner who turned out to be the Others' leader) was sending Michael and Walt on their merry way, and he told Michael that even if he tried to tell anyone about the island, it wouldn't matter because he'd never be able to find his way back again. But after the energy was released into the atmosphere, those agents of whatshisname's girlfriend suddenly got an unexpected positive response on their instruments and reported to their boss (Desmond's girlfriend) that they'd found him. So, it seems that the island's location had heretofore been shielded like a Romulan whatchamcallit or Avalon, and after that energy was released, it became exposed in our reality.
That's all I got, except, does anyone know if Michael's really gone for good (or would it be too good to be true)?

Date: 2006-05-26 02:46 pm (UTC)I never got that (and to add in to your comment about Sayid/Islam. Wasn't there something with Sun and Jin and a Buddaist temple?)
I'm with you. I don't think any of it is supposed to be about Christianity per se. They like to play with concepts of faith, belief, and skepticism. And I don't think they're doing it out of any underlying Christian agenda, but because those are really compelling things to play with in stories.
I tend to put it in the same category as the Mulder/Scully dynamic from the X-Files where he was willing to believe everything except religion and she was a strict skeptic with everything BUT religion. It manages to make the characters interesting, and it gives lots of interesting things to play with storywise. Science and faith can be a heady story mixture and I tend to think the writers are just enjoying using it as an impetus for the characters rather than any message about Christiany.
But, then, what do I know. My mother (and a few weeks ago my nephew) likes to laughingly refer to our whole family as a bunch of pagans (religiously speaking. Which... we aren't. We're actually probably agnostics with leanings toward aethism... who all like to research religion for some odd reason.
Case in point it was my SISTER who e-mailed me the link to this lecture: science of religion (http://vmsstreamer1.fnal.gov/VMS_Site_03/Lectures/Colloquium/060215Dennett/vf001.htm) (which I rec as highly interesting, though no doubt controversial).

Date: 2006-05-27 02:17 am (UTC)Penny's father owns or has a huge part in the Hanso Corporation. He's probably the guy we see from a distance in the training video tape. Penny has been looking for Desmond's boat, but like the poster above said, intil now the electromagnetic anomalies around the island have been messing up the tracking signal. Presumably that's also the reson no radio signals can get in or out reliably. (What I want to know is, if this thing produces an electromagnetic pulse strong enough to knock a plane out of the sky, why didn't it fry every computer on the island?)
The entire Hanso Project seems to have been a series of interlocking psychological tests, possibly designed to test or strengthen psychic abilities, although some of the apparently pointless rituals may have real purpose as well. The participants are kept from discovering one another with tales of an infectious disease.
My theory is that the Others are the original staff of the project, and possibly some of their descendants, who have rebelled against the corporation. They maintain control of some fairly major installations, but they didn't have access to Our Heroes' hatch, which, until recently, was unassailable. Desmond's partner apparently refused to go along with them for some reason when they rebelled. They may or may not have access to the transmitter broadcasting Rousseau's message.
Henry originally wanted to infiltrate the castaways so he could gain access to the hatch--obviously, the EM discharge machine is extremely important. Rousseau capturing him totally screwed up that plan, but his people were able to use Michael to free him.
The Others are still concerned with the original objective of testing or discovering psychic ability. That's why they wanted Walt, who is some kind of demon seed in that respect. They mentioned that they'd gotten more than they bargained for with him, and are seemingly glad to be rid of him. Claire's baby may be another target, eventually.
The Hanso Corporation may not realize that the hatch is no longer under the control of their personnel (as they are still air-dropping food.)
That's all I can think of offhand...
