Have been MIA for several days.

However, for once I can say that I actually accomplished something on the weekend.  In this case I stripped out all of the wallpaper in my kitchen, which leads me to the conclusion that I will never, ever, ever, EVER place or allow wallpaper to be placed anywhere in any home I have or may ever have in the future because it is a insane bitch to remove. Seriously, if I didn't own a clothes steamer, I think I would still be there trying to strip off that wall paper.

Plumber finally came Friday and capped the water where the old refrigerator was.  Will need to patch the concrete floor there.

Bought  paint -- Sherwin Williams'"Blonde" for the walls and "Rainwashed" for the ceiling (yeah, I'm going with a tinted ceiling.  I'm thinking it will balance the slate floor nicely). I have enough Benjamin Moore "China White" from a project a couple of years ago to take care of the trim so I'm covered there.  And my sister seems to have enough left over crown molding in her basement from her house that I may have crown molding for free.  So free = yay!

My unexpected purchase of refrigerator was supposed to be delivered today but they called saying that it hasn't been shipped so -- boo!

Decided that I don't actually need a new light fixture over the (planned) new island, so that's a little savings.

Decided that the small antique piece in my dining room (that I picked up in college) may indeed fit the new area of exposed wall in the kitchen and so I may not need to buy a new piece of furniture (that's not a stool for the island) for kitchen storage, which is nice.  Although, while looking for a piece for the kitchen last week, I saw this weathered wooden Buddha in an antique shop and the more I think about it, the more I want it to place on top of this antique piece.  The next Friday that I have off, I'll have to price it (this shop has things from the absurdly reasonable to the flat-out absurd, so I need to discover which end of the spectrum this Buddha fits.  ::fingers crossed for the absurdly reasonable because I think it would be a really cool art piece.::

Other than that, it was a beautiful weekend.  The advantage of living in the South (providing some balance for the fact that we are generally looked upon as being the ignorant assholes of the universe complete with Senators who repeatedly go on television to reinforce the image that we're the ignorant assholes of the universe) is that, though winter occurs here, it is in short spurts interrupted by what looks and feels like spring, which is to say that this weekend featured clear sunny skies and 70 degree weather causing the daffodils and the forsythia to begin to bloom.  For February, you cannot beat that.   So though I was stuck stripping wallpaper, the kitchen was sunny and the windows open, so (apart from the work) it was quite pleasant.

We are going to see photos of all this, right? We demand photos.

You do know about a paper tiger , right?

It will take a while to have photos of anything but construction. The issue with DIYs is that they are slow. :)

And we had the wallpaper stripper stuff, but truthfully, it didn't work nearly as well as my dragging out my clothes steamer and using it.

For all my complaints it really only took about 8 hours in total (spread over 2 days) to do the entire kitchen, so not too bad, just an annoyance.

Congrats on the super-productivity that will soon pay off in a BEAUTIFUL kitchen!

And sorry, but this part just made me LOL:

Hey, we as a country were represented by a guy for eight years who I found pretty embarrassing...So I know that the "representative" may not represent! ;)

I have hopes for the kitchen.

And, yeah, there's Bush, but have you seen Shelby? Or, rather, how can you miss him? He's being an incredible dick. I suppose since he decided he's retiring after this term he feels that he doesn't have to worry about keeping any sort of image so he can be as big of a dick as he wants.

Oh, man. You're not encouraging me for one of the home improvement tasks we have waiting for us. We've got three rooms with wallpaper (the dining room and two bathrooms), and we want all of it gone. At least with the bathrooms we won't have to worry about steaming it off, since we're planning on completely gutting them, including replacing sheetrock.

However, reading about your experience will keep me from succumbing to the urge I get nearly every day to just start tearing the stuff down.

Can't wait to see how this all looks!

Truthfully, bitching aside, it was annoying, but not so hard that it was discouraging. I do rec a steamer though. The wallpaper stripping stuff didn't do squat. The steamer was actually relatively efficient once I got the hang of it.

You're incredibly productive there -- and the kitchen sounds like it's going to be gorgeous.

At the moment, however, it has no floor and one wall ripped out. Hopefully one day soon we can begin putting it back together, we're still just barely through the "ripping stuff out" phase. :)

I helped remodel our whole house in MD, it was a lot of work, but I had so much fun

I actually do rather enjoy accomplishing something. Still, it will be nice to have a refrigerator again so I can stop living off of take-out.

When we moved to our current home - I stripped wallpaper off three bathrooms, two bedrooms and the kitchen. I will never live with wallpaper again, ever, even if I like it, because I am so sick of stripping, patching, sanding....Blergh.

I HATE WALLPAPER.

It sounds like your home is coming along nicely. I'm glad.

Seriously! It's not that wallpaper doesn't have its uses, but changing it is beyond a bitch and just not worth putting it up. At least with paint it's just another bucket of paint to rid yourself of it.

Wallpaper was clearly invented by SATAN!

Wallpaper is evil.

No kidding! It's like some cruel trick that one you have it, it insists that you have it forever... because you just don't want to go through the crap it requires to rid yourself of it.
