shipperx: (Dr. Who - look serious when you panic)
[personal profile] shipperx
Something is really wrong with my cat. She was just fine Friday (actually being a bit of a pest with her food demands). And she seemed fine yesterday morning, but when I came home last night at 11pm and she jumped on the bed, she stumbled and appeared to lose balance. When she tried to get off the bed (and I reached to help) she jumped and fell, skidding across the floor. I became really worried, and tried to get her to drink water (she did) and get her to walk, but the poor dear wobbles and shakes. She tries to walk but she knocks herself off balance if she moves very fast. She doesn't appear to be in any pain. Her eyes are clear. She's reactive (though a bit more reactive to noise than usual). Her personality is mostly the same. I was up with her until about 2am, when she finally settled down and slept, and she slept most of the morning.

I called and the pet shop near me has a vet in this afternoon, but I also called the vet I usually use (got his answering service) and that service lists that he comes in at 5:30pm to 6:30pm on Sunday (and is only about 1/4mi from my house. I could easily walk there from here, though I won't. The weather is for shit today). Since I would prefer the normal vet, I was going to wait until his office hours (which means that I'll miss the pet shop hours). She doesn't seem to be in any distress. She behaves normally except that she is wobbley. (And having googled, her symptoms can stretch from something minor that'll go away on its own, to a few treatable things, to a stroke (she is nearly 17 after all), to something incurable and fatal. So there's just no way for me to know.) Hopefully, he really will be in at 5:30pm (though there is no way to contact him directly). And I can't tell whether she's better this morning or not. She has eaten, drunk water, and gone to potty, though. If it weren't for the extreme balance problem, you wouldn't know that she was sick. I hope, hope, hope it's something simple (if the doctor can diagnose it at all). ::fingers crossed it's not something serious:: I know the baby is old, but she has never behaved like an old cat, and my last cat lived to be 23. Carly isn't quite 17 yet.

ETA: Finally got in contact with the vet's office. Turns out the vet himself doesn't come in on Sunday just some of the staff. I had already missed the vet time at the pet store. The regular vet's office gave me the number of the emergency vet a few miles from me and I spoke to her on the phone. She said that as long as my cat was eating, drinking, going to the potty and in no visible pain and without labored breathing that I could wait until tomorrow and take her to my usual vet. Just to keep her confined so that she doesn't hurt herself by climbing up on something (which she could. I caught her an hour or two ago in her favorite place on the back of the chocolate-colored chair. Not sure how she'd climbed up there. She's eating about the same as always and may seem just a bit more balanced (hard to tell. She still shivers occasionally when you hold her, but that might actually be feverish chills). At any rate, unless she worsens I'm going to hold off until tomorrow morning and take her to her normal vet. SHe hates car rides so badly that she usually ends up foaming at the mouth and the emergency vet is nearly 20 miles from here. I'm not sure that the trip wouldn't traumatize her worst. Her usual vet is less than 1/4mile from my house (I can literally hear dogs in the kennels from my front yard if things are quiet and the dogs are barking). Plus her regular vet has seen her several times before and has her medical history.

Right now she's napping in the seat of her favorite chair, and she ate a few minutes ago, so I'm going to let her be for the time being.

Oh, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you can ge in to see your vet, and that it really is a minor problem.

Turns out only the vet's staff comes in for a couple of hours on Sunday, no actual doc. I'll have to wait until tomorrow or go to the regional emergency vet (which my family knows from experience charges outrageously). I spoke to the emergency vet over the phone and she said that as long as Carly was eating, drinking, and urinating/pooping normally and didn't appear to have any breathing distress (which she hasn't) that I could wait until to morrow and take her to her normal vet. So, for the moment, that's the plan. She seems comfortable enough for the moment and no worse (perhaps ::fingers crossed::: even somewhat better) so unless things change, I'll go first thing in the morning. She hates going to the vet so badly, and she hates the car so much that I hate to traumatize her with the 20 mile drive to the emergency vet and stick with the one that's within walking distance from my house.

Oh no!

As you've already found out it could be all sorts of things, I so hope it's none of the more serious ones

Thanks. Though it looks like I won't be able to see the vet until tomorrow. She doesn't seem any worse and she continues to eat and drink so I after talking to the emergency vet over the phone, I've decided not to traumatize her with the 20 mi. trip to the emergency vet and wait for her usual vet just up the street to open in the morning.

I hope so. She hasn't shown any signs of distress other than confusion that she can't keep her balance but, if I'm not kidding myself, she seems to be doing that just a bit better this afternoon. I spoke with the emergency vet on the phone and she said that as long as Carly was eating, drinking, etc. and didn't seem to have breathing trouble that I could wait and take her to her normal vet so for the moment that's the plan.

Hopefully. She hasn't seemed to get any worse in the last 12 hours and I spoke to the emergency vet on the phone who said that as long as she wasn't in pain, was breathing well, and was eating, drinking, and urinating that it would be okay for me to wait until in the morning and take her to her usual vet (who is about 20 miles closer to home than the emergency vet. And to say my cat hates to get into a car is an understatement). So for the time being, I'm planning to take her to the usual vet up the street in the morning.

Hopefully it's just some bug that she's fighting off. Turns out my usual vet doesn't actually come in on Sunday (no matter what his service says), just some of his staff pop in for a couple of hours to check on the animals and walk some (one of the reason I've liked that vet is that I always see his staff walking the dogs every morning when I leave to work). Their staff referred me to the emergency vet who I spoke to on the phone who said athat as long as she was eating, drinking, going to the potty, and didn't seem to be in any pain or have any trouble breathing, that it would be okay to wait until her normal vet opened in the morning. So that's where I stand at the momment.

Hope so. She doesn't seem any worse, and is still eating, drinking, behaving normally (except for being wobbley). Unfortnately... he wasn't. Just his staff comes in a couple of hours on Sundays to walk the dogs and check on the animals. The vet is that close).

Carly doesn't seem any worse (and maybe, just maybe a bit better), so unless things change I'm just going to wait for her regular vet to open in the morning.

Something similar happened to one of my parents cats. She was out in the garden and then seemed to flop over. When she got up her balance was off. We rushed her immediately to the vet because we thought she's had a stroke (she was getting on too), but it turned out to be a perforated eardrum. She's now deaf, but fine.

I'd still get her to the vet asap. You don't know what quick treatment might prevent.

Hopefully it'll be something like that.

Hopefully. The emergency vet said that as long as she appeared pain-free and had no breathing problems, and as long as she was still eating, drinking, and going to the litterbox, it should be okay to wait and take her to her normal vet. I hate to traumatize her with a long ride to the emergency vet. She wails as if she's dying and foams at the mouth when I have to drive her anywhere, so it's to be avoided if I can.

I just hate traumatizing her with a drive to the regional emergency vet. She foams at the mouth and seems traumatized after car rides. Speaking with the emergency vet, as long as she's eating, drinking, going to the bathroom and is in no visible pain or having breathing problems it should be okay to wait. That said I still have the antibiotics from the time she had the gland infection, and it's still in date, so I gave her a dose of that (and now she's shooting me baleful glares). Am keeping a close eye on her, and hopefully she'll be okay to just take to the regular vet in the morning.

Not three weeks ago I had something very similar with my 13 year old dog. Turned out to be a raging inner ear infection. 2 week course of antibiotics and she's fine.

But it was scary when she was fine in the morning and staggering in the afternoon.

Hopefully it's something that simple. Having gotten in contact with my normal vet's office, he won't be in at all this Sunday. They gave me the number of the emergency vet who is 20 miles away, and she said that as long as Carly was eating, drinking, and going to the litter box, and as long as she was breathing well and didn't appear to be in pain that it would be okay to wait for her normal vet. Carly hates riding in cars (she foams at the mouth in one) that I hate traumatizing her with the drive when her usual vet is practically next door. I do have some left over antibiotics from when she was sick before and which is still in date so I gave her a dose of that and am waiting for the vet to open in the morning.

Their is a group on livejournal called cathealth, that I read once in a while, and have posted on with about my cats. They might offer some idea, http://community.livejournal.com/cathealth/profile

It doesn't sound like a seizure from what I have experinced ? Has she been walking like she is crab legged ? Because my siamese has suffered from arthitis and sometimes will walk like that. It could be effecting her hips, or back. But otherwise I have no idea. Alot of people online have had a sick pet or lost one recently. I myself am worried about my almost 15 year old siamese, but since I have had him he always flucates on his weight. And litter box skills suffer when he doesn't feel well acourse he will pee or poop on something if he gets mad too. But that's just him.

Date: 2010-01-25 02:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com
It hasn't appeared to be a seizure. It's more just a lack of balance where she wobbles and has to correct for it in a way that if she shakes her head she stumbles.

She does have a bit of arthritis, but she isn't behaving as though she's in pain, just dizzy.

Re: your kitty's weight, my cat tends to run underweight (always has) and on the suggestion from someone I began augmenting her regular catfood with some kitten food as kitten food has more calories. If yours is underweight you might try it. I don't know much about if the kitty is overweight.
